Junior Assistant Clinician (Internship) in Glasgow

The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital is recruiting several Junior Assistant Clinicians (Interns) to deliver small animal veterinary clinical and care service under the supervision of experienced specialist staff.

Job purpose

To deliver small animal veterinary clinical and care service under the supervision of experienced and fully qualified staff. Junior Assistant Clinicians will, on a rotating basis, participate and assist, under supervision in Referral Clinical activities, in the areas such as anaesthesia, emergency medicine, internal medicine, oncology, radiology, neurology, soft tissue surgery and orthopaedics as directed by the Hospital Board.

Junior Assistant Clinicians will also, on a rotating basis, participate, and have direct case responsibility, in a Primary Care Out of Hours service.

In all these activities Junior Assistant Clinicians will support student training and receive appropriate training themselves as required.

N.B. These posts are offered on a 1 year fixed-term basis, such that they offer the early-stage clinical experience required in preparation for further specialist training, for example through European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS®) approved residencies and/or masters formal training programmes. While appointments may be extended for short-fixed term period where this would be in the mutual interest, in the interests of ensuring that veterinary career development is supported, and to assist with recruitment to the University’s EBVS® approved Residency and our own Masters Programmes, the one-year duration will remain the normal duration.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• In a developing capacity, provide qualified veterinary services by assisting in the provision of a high standard of veterinary care to referred patients, under direction from senior colleagues.
• Provide a high standard of veterinary care to primary care patients, usually after consultation with appropriate experienced colleagues.
• Take part in the junior clinician rota within the hospital and assist in the organisation of that rota.
• Attend and participate in various clinical rounds, seminars and journal clubs.
• Assess and present appropriate clinical case material and recommendations at rounds and seminars as directed by senior clinicians.
• Be involved in clinical research projects throughout the hospital (for example by surplus sample storage, data collection etc.).
• Prepare and submit for publication during the first year at least one technical / professional publication alone or in conjunction with others.
• Undertake appropriate verbal and written communication with owners, referring practices and other primary care practices as directed by senior staff.
• Use the hospital record system to add charges, record clinical observations and communications, ensuring that record keeping complies with clinical standards, relevant legislation and local practices.
• Prepare for and undertake training through supervised exposure to referred cases, within the areas stated above, on a rotational basis.
• Deliver ad hoc training and supervision of undergraduate students.
• Maintain own CPD record, case log and engage in self-reflection and private study.

Essential

• A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS. For those individuals who are not already Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or citizens of an English-speaking country, it will be necessary, in order to be eligible to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, to demonstrate the minimal required standard of the RCVS at the time of this job application (and this will be checked if the applicant is invited for interview).**
• A2 Knowledge of national veterinary regulations and practices.

Desirable

• B1 Postgraduate academic achievement relative to peer group (such as publishing technical articles).

Skills

Essential

• C1 Proficiency at delivering the highest standards of clinical care under the direction of others.
• C2 Ability to communicate effectively using written and spoken English with clients, nurses, students, other scholars and staff.
• C3 Motivation to undertake scholarship.
• C4 Demonstrable ability to work in a team.
• C5 Ability to give good directions to student veterinary nurses and student veterinary surgeons.
• C6 High standard of professional ethics.

Experience

Essential

• E1 At least one year of practical clinical experience and training with companion animals (this may include undergraduate courses with a significant practical component and periods of extra-mural studies).
• E2 Practical clinical skills in areas such as anaesthesia, radiography, basic surgery, placement of intravenous catheters etc.

Desirable

• F1 Experience of making clinical decisions with companion animals in first opinion or referral practice.
• F2 Experience of practical responsibility for clinical case management.
• F3 Experience of coping with a substantial clinical case load.
• F4 Experience of small group or individual student teaching.
• F5 Experience of clinical or basic science research.

Other

Essential

• G1 Willingness and ability to work anti-social hours, shift work and to cover in cases of colleague absence.
• G2 Willingness and ability to take direction from senior staff, residents and senior nurses and maintain good working relationships with all staff and students.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 12 months.

There are two available intakes for these positions, with start dates of 29 March 2027 and 23 August 2027. Please indicate in your cover letter whether you wish to be considered for one intake only or both intakes.
