Overview
In this role you support postgraduate teaching by demonstrating practical equipment, experiments, and datasets to MSc students, helping them connect theory with hands-on work. You’ll work under supervision in a collaborative School setting, ensuring safe, effective demonstrations and clear explanations. You contribute to teaching material and assist with assessment where appropriate, while aligning activities with course aims and learning outcomes. This position supports the School’s mission to enhance student learning and its international profile by maintaining high teaching standards.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate and instruct students in the use of practical equipment and processes, addressing questions during demonstrations
- Assist students with practical exercises and data analysis guidance
- Maintain health and safety standards and raise concerns as needed
- Contribute to development of teaching materials and workbooks
- Assist in marking tests using defined criteria where applicable
- Provide feedback on student performance and issues to the course organiser
- Prepare equipment and materials for sessions to ensure smooth demonstrations
- Engage in continuing professional development
- Undertake other duties as required by the Head of School
- Contribute to enhancing the University’s international profile in line with the Strategic Plan
Key requirements
- A1. SCQF Level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant subject or cognate discipline, or equivalent
- A2. Expert knowledge of the relevant subject/class/session
- A3. Awareness of learning outcomes of the course
- C1. Advanced knowledge of relevant subject
- C2. Ability to assemble and use equipment (including relevant software) for experiments/exercises
- C3. Ability to explain demonstrated items or techniques to different groups
- C4. Effective communication skills
- C5. Usually holds a degree or equivalent relevant to the teaching area
- C6. Understanding of health and safety procedures
