We are seeking a highly motivated Computer Scientist to advance tissue-based research through innovative computational and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches to pathological images. Through use of specialist technical expertise, the postholder will design and optimise digital pathology workflows, develop robust image analysis pipelines and integrate AI-driven solutions to support tissue microarray construction across multiple tissue types. They will combine expertise in computational science with an understanding of histopathology to drive high-quality image analysis and AI-based pathology solutions. They will work closely with pathologists and laboratory scientists to enable robust, scalable digital pathology across multiple disease areas.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Using detailed specialist knowledge, be responsible for the development and implementation of computational models for whole-slide image (WSI) analysis, including segmentation, classification, and feature extraction.
- Be responsible for the application of AI and machine learning techniques to improve tissue image interpretation, for use in case selection and tissue annotation for tissue microarray construction.
- Lead the evaluation of model performance and improve accuracy through validation and expert feedback.
- Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College/Group/School, and where relevant external contacts, to enhance the delivery of research aims and support the broader strategic aims of the University.
- This will include engagement with multidisciplinary teams to integrate computational workflows into tissue-based research projects.
- Undertake specialist technical aspects of the research to support computational pathology research projects, including study design, analysis, interpretation, and publication.
- Provide specialist advice, training and support to researchers using digital pathology systems and analysis tools.
- Make a significant contribution to the development, implementation and review of Standard Operating Procedures, documentation, and best practices for computational workflows, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, University policy, and best practice.
- Keep up to date with developments in relevant research/technical areas and within the broader discipline to ensure contribution to research goals is optimised.
- Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia, and workshops to develop and enhance our research and/or impact profile.
- Develop/improve the capability of staff and students within MVLS with an interest in using computational pathology systems, motivating and mentoring staff and students to better meet the current and future requirements.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by Head of Service/School.
Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential:
- A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role. OR: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 [Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4] or equivalent, (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar role.
- A2 Significant breadth or depth of specialist technical knowledge and recognised as an expert in the relevant discipline or project.
Skills Essential:
- C1 Significant analytical and problem‑solving capability, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when dealing with complex and/or high volume datasets.
- C2 Proven interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to understand, conceptualise and interpret complex technical requirements of a research/teaching group and adapt own style to meet the needs of others.
- C3 Excellent team‑working and people‑management skills, with ability to collaborate with multiple internal and external stakeholders for effective project management.
- C4 Significant relevant work experience within a similar research/teaching services environment, including evidence of previous outputs and professional development.
- C5 Proficiency in programming with Python, C++, and familiarity with AI frameworks.
- C6 Good understanding of WSI formats and tools (OpenSlide, QuPath, etc.).
- C7 A comprehensive and up‑to‑date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the relevant research disciplines, as outlined in the Job Purpose.
Desirable:
- D1 Understanding of histopathology image structure, magnification levels, staining (H&E, IHC), and common slide artefacts.
- D2 Demonstrated experience in tissue image analysis or computational models using WSIs.
Experience Essential
- E1 Effective organisation skills to manage time, prioritise, and deliver appropriate research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities.
- E2 Clear communication of complex technical concepts to non‑specialists.
- E3 Experience handling large image datasets.
- E4 Experience with HPC, GPU computing, or cloud‑based computational workflows.
- E5 Experience in preparing analysis and presentation of data to publication standard.
- E6 Experience of operating independently in progressing and delivering research/teaching goals within set timescales.
Desirable
- F1 Prior involvement in computational pathology projects or related research publications.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum. This post is full time and fixed term up until 30th March 2027. Location: The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
