The Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance (SULSA) is a strategic partnership of 12 universities and 1 research institute in Scotland working with industry, public sector and policymakers to support and enhance research and innovation excellence within the life sciences. Acting at a national and international level, SULSA builds research communities, supports industry engagement and delivers entrepreneurial and innovation-focused training for researchers. The postholder will provide comprehensive communications, events and administrative support to SULSA. Working as part of a small, dynamic team, the postholder will play a key role in delivering national and international events, strengthening SULSA's communications and engagement activity, and supporting the effective delivery of a diverse portfolio of internally and externally funded projects. The role requires proactive working, initiative and the ability to manage competing priorities within a supportive environment.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide communications, events and administrative support across SULSA's portfolio of activities and projects.
  • Create, schedule and monitor content across SULSA social media channels (LinkedIn, X and Bluesky) to promote events, opportunities and impact.
  • Produce the monthly SULSA newsletter, including drafting content, coordinating inputs and managing distribution.
  • Maintain and manage SULSA's mailing lists, sharing relevant internal and external opportunities with the SULSA community.
  • Design and produce marketing and communications materials (e.g. posters, slide decks, digital assets) in line with SULSA branding and tone.
  • Support the planning and delivery of national and international events, including registration management, targeted promotion, room bookings, catering, travel and accommodation arrangements.
  • Provide support for in-person (across Scotland, travel required) and online events, including on-the-day coordination as required.
  • Create, distribute and analyse event feedback surveys and produce concise summary reports capturing outcomes and learning.
  • Prepare short reports, briefings and occasional presentations for SULSA internal committees, funders or events.
  • Act as a first point of contact for general SULSA communications and events enquiries, responding professionally and working with colleagues to identify appropriate solutions.
  • Work collaboratively within a small team and with a wide network of external stakeholders across academia, industry and the public sector.
  • Undertake other related duties commensurate with the grade of the post as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the postholder.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

  • A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3, HNC) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

Desirable

  • B1. A Science-related qualification or background, or demonstrable understanding of the research environment.
  • B2. A business administration qualification or relevant experience in an administrative or project support role.

Skills

  • C1. Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to deadlines.
  • C2. Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to create clear, engaging content for a range of audiences in English.
  • C3. Excellent IT skills, including strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams).
  • C4. Understanding of effective communications practices, including social media, newsletters and digital engagement.
  • C5. Confidence using social media platforms for professional communications and engagement.
  • C6. High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in event logistics, communications and data handling.
  • C7. Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact, diplomacy and professionalism when working with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • C8. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, using initiative to anticipate needs and solve problems.
  • C9. Ability to gather, interpret and present information clearly in written summaries, reports or presentations.

Desirable

  • D1. Basic design or content creation skills and experience creating marketing materials using Canva.
  • D2. Experience of analysing engagement or feedback data to support reporting and continuous improvement.

Experience

  • Essential E1. Experience of working in a busy administrative, communications or events-support role, managing competing deadlines.
  • E2. Experience supporting the organisation and delivery of meetings, workshops or events (in-person and/or online).
  • E3. Experience of applying judgement, policies and procedures.
  • E4. Experience working collaboratively within a team to support delivery of organisational or project objectives.

  • F1. Experience working across sectors, such as academia, industry and/or the public sector.
  • F2. Experience using university administrative systems and processes.
  • F3. Experience supporting externally funded projects or working in a multi-project environment.
  • F4. Knowledge of, or experience working in, the higher education, research or innovation sector.

Further Details

The postholder will be employed by the University of Glasgow but work in partnership with SULSA's members and stakeholders across the life sciences sector in Scotland and Europe. The role is full-time with funding until July 31st 2027, with national and optional international travel. The role requires 35 hours per week, worked flexibly with a combination of office and work from home (hybrid working). SULSA are committed to supporting the professional development of team members.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 5, £28,031 - £31,236 per annum. This post is full time and open ended with funding available up until 31st July 2027.
