The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine is seeking to recruit a dynamic and motivated clinician to join our Small Animal Medicine team. We welcome applications from candidates who hold an ECVIM/ACVIM diploma or have completed an approved residency training programme. In addition to clinical activities, the post offers a significant element of ‘off clinics’ time for research and scholarship. The role will also involve the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, interns and residents. An interest in gastroenterology would be advantageous.
Job Purpose
To deliver an efficient and effective Internal Medicine service by providing expertise and clinical activity in the Small Animal Hospital. To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, clinical scholars and to undertake clinical research/scholarship within the internal medicine service thereby contributing to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Clinical
- Provide a high-quality internal medicine service and give appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners, maintaining a clinical referral workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and research activities.
- Support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.
- Contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.
- Participate in the out-of-hours service, ensuring adequate cover is available for direct supervision, advice and expertise when required.
- Support the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of the clinical scholars, by supervising clinical duties and research projects, with a view to their successful completion of appropriate Board examinations.
- Participate in practical, professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to the internal medicine service at national and international level as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the speciality and the RCVS.
- Participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.
- Teaching
- Engage in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders.
- Contribute to the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
- Engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and participate fully in the examination process using a variety of methods and techniques, and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
- Clinical Research/Scholarship
- Collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine of an external reputation and develop a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed clinical journals and/or textbooks.
- Attend and participate in national and international events, research seminars and conferences within the service area.
- Administration
- Develop material to promote the internal medicine service both at conferences and electronically.
- Undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division.
- Contribute to the performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with university strategy.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential Knowledge / Qualifications
- Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.
- Completion of recognised residency training programme.
For appointment at Grade 8
- Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.
- ECVIM/ACVIM Diploma in Internal Medicine (Companion Animal).
Desirable Knowledge / Qualifications
- PhD (or other evidence of research training).
- Hold a relevant teaching qualification.
Essential Skills
- High standard of communication skills both orally and written.
- High standard of presentation skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.
- Self‑motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to provide specialist level veterinary care to patients in the small animal hospital.
Desirable Skills
- Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.
Essential Experience
- Postgraduate clinical experience in internal medicine speciality.
- Evidence of clinical publications.
For appointment at Grade 8 – Experience
- Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.
Desirable Experience
- Teaching or training experience at undergraduate level.
Note: Candidates having completed a recognised residency training programme and Board‑eligible would be appointed at Grade 7 and will be promoted to Grade 8 immediately upon passing the Board exams. Candidates with suitable relevant experience will be considered for appointment at Grade 7.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7/8: £41,064 – £46,049 per annum or £50,253 – £58,225 per annum, plus an additional generous market and out‑of‑hours supplement and the employer pension contribution. Post is full‑time (35 hours per week) and open‑ended; part‑time work will be considered. The successful candidate will be enrolled onto the University’s Early Career Development Programme, which supports advancement of an academic career.
