As a Clinical Innovation Fellow (CIF) you will play a key role in the clinical project management and delivery of evaluations within the HealthTech Innovation and Translation Lab (HealthTech Lab). You will be responsible for tracking progress and providing final reports to the HealthTech Lab operations team. The role involves close collaboration with study teams, which will consist of industry partners or research groups. In addition to project responsibilities, you will contribute actively to the PPIE activities of the HealthTech Lab and will be encouraged and supported to deliver innovative and effective patient and public engagement activities. You will be supported by the wider HealthTech Lab team and will have access to an academic mentor for guidance and development throughout the fellowship.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of clinical workflows relevant to the health technology under operation.
- Proactively engage with clinical teams from a range of disciplines, acting as the first point of contact for clinicians and volunteers.
- Collaborate with Research and Innovation (R&I) teams to design clinical studies, including protocol development, approvals and initiate study.
- Lead on the recruitment of volunteers for trials, implementing strategies to improve recruitment, with support from HealthTech Lab/Living Lab operations teams and peers.
- Work collaboratively with appropriate experts (e.g. statisticians, health economists, HealthTech Lab operation team members etc.) to ensure robust design and delivery.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to the recording, monitoring and evaluation processes of the HealthTech Lab.
- Prepare concise summary reports and effectively communicate study results and findings to the operations team, clinicians, researchers, innovators and wider audiences as required.
- Support and participate in patient and public engagement activities in conjunction with HealthTech Lab communications teams to ensure inclusive and meaningful activities.
- Provide information and updates to support funding reports and presentations and present progress and updates at meetings with funders and strategic partners as required.
- The Fellow will be encouraged to register for a higher degree (MD or PhD) as potential progression of the post.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential Knowledge and Qualifications
- MBChB or equivalent
- Applicants should have achieved foundation level competencies and have worked for at least 24 months within the NHS
- Full registration with General Medical Council & License to Practice
- Knowledge of UK clinical research legal and regulatory requirements
- Completed Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
- Knowledge of and understanding the NHS GGC R&D processes
- Should not hold a CCT or be within 6 months of CCT on intended start date
- An understanding of public patient involvement and engagement (PPIE) in research.
Desirable Knowledge and Qualifications
- Post graduate examination (i.e., MCRP / MRCEM / MRCS)
- Peer reviewed publication
- Completion of CST / IMT or equivalent

Essential Clinical Experience
- Clinical experience in General Medicine, Surgical or related specialties equivalent with over 24 months experience
- Broad interest in academic medicine and awareness of ethical issues
- Previous experience in design and/or delivery of clinical education
- Evidence of engagement in quality improvement and audit
- Evidence of engagement with research, completion of Good Clinical Practice certification
- Experience of working within a clinical multidisciplinary team (MDT)
Desirable Clinical Experience
- Experience of working in the QEUH campus Glasgow and or similar working environment.
- Experience in recruiting for clinical trials or clinical studies
- Practical experience in writing and submitting ethics applications, presenting ethics applications to ethics committees, submitting revisions and obtaining approvals
Contract and Benefits
The contract will be a fixed term 1 year appointment. The role will be split with 50% of the time dedicated to HealthTech Lab activities, 20% to PG Cert and 30% clinical. This post is full time and has funding for up to 12 months. Salary will be on the Clinical Academic scale £48288 - £91753 per annum depending on experience.
