Job Purpose
This role will enable the development of advanced clinical skills in Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) and Adaptive Radiotherapy (ART), alongside clinical trial and research expertise, supporting the development of a clinical and research programme. It provides the postholder with an exciting opportunity to acquire skills and experience with the Ethos radiotherapy facility and the associated Hypersight high resolution imaging capabilities.
The postholder will contribute to the delivery and expansion of SABR and adaptive radiotherapy services at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. Advanced radiotherapy training, clinical service development and patient care will form the primary focus of the post, complemented by participation in clinical research, audit, and a small amount of teaching.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Support, develop and maintain SABR and adaptive radiotherapy services through implementation and optimisation of new technologies and workflows; enrolment, treatment planning, supervision and clinical care of patients; and participation in relevant clinical trials.
2. Write and submit applications for Ethics and Research Management approval, as appropriate and in conjunction with PIs.
3. Manage data handling and interpretation of research results and take the lead in writing abstracts and presentations for scientific conferences and submitting papers for publication in appropriate peer-reviewed journals.
4. Prepare research reports, and submit at least one manuscript of material for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
5. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and departmental research group activities.
6. Present work at internal and external seminars and national/ international conferences as appropriate to enhance the profile of the research group.
7. Deliver teaching materials and supervise undergraduate/postgraduate student projects and contribute to the academic progress of students
8. Contribute to the organisation of project-related workshops, seminars or conferences.
9. Undertake some clinical work under an NHS honorary contract as detailed below.
10. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 MBChB or equivalent.
A2 Registered with General Medical Council [GMC] and licensed to practice [or able to be registered if overseas candidate].
A3Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCRPart 1) if a UK trainee,or equivalent experience.
Desirable
B1 BSc or equivalent intercalated degree.
B2 Evidence of distinction in career to date e.g. prizes, awards, bursaries.
B3 Evidence of interest or experience in adaptive radiotherapy.
Skills
Essential
C1 Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collegially to achieve a common goal/School objective.
C2 Evidence of self-motivation, originality, innovation and the ability to work independently.
C3 Good organisational skills including the ability to manage research projects.
C4 Excellent communication both oral and written.
Experience

E1 Sufficient clinical experience in medicine or related specialties, relevant to the School.

F1 Previous experience in research.
F2 Previous experience in undergraduate teaching or postgraduate teaching.
Training and Mentorship
All Clinical Fellows will have a mentor assigned at the time of appointment, with whom they will have regular meetings to monitor progress, identify and facilitate opportunities and help overcome any barriers to progress. Clinical Fellows are encouraged to attend workshops and training in generic transferable skills organised by the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences Graduate School. Regular attendance and contribution to the Radiotherapy Research Group is expected.
Clinical Work
For registered medical practitioners, an honorary grading will be agreed with the relevant NHS Service, commensurate with the seniority of the appointee.
Clinical activities will include those required for research training such as recruitment to trials and conduct of clinical research. Additional clinical experience including management and radiotherapy planning of patients will be a feature of this Clinical Fellow post . Where any clinical activities of a Service nature extend beyond the usual working week, confirmation in advance of any such responsibilities and agreement on additional payments must be obtained from appropriate NHS Services management. The individual will have a contract with the NHS Services via the appropriate directorate/division, which will specify the agreed amount of clinical work and the level of remuneration. Since the funding for this post does not include an element for clinical training or NHS service work, any such clinical work must be arranged to avoid impacting substantially on research time.
Funding Sources
The post is funded for a fixed 12-month duration, as specified in the post-specific information. Appointment will be based on the candidate’s career achievements to date and their potential to contribute to the delivery, development, and evaluation of SABR and adaptive radiotherapy services.
Salary will be aligned to an appropriate Clinical Fellow scale (ST-level equivalent), dependent on the experience and seniority of the appointee.
There may be opportunities for additional remuneration through NHS clinical activity, subject to agreement with local NHS management and service requirements. In relation to such arrangements, the University will normally act as paymaster only.
Training Base
The Clinical Fellow will be based at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
Supervision
Clinical and research supervision will be provided by Dr Derek Grose (Consultant Clinical Oncologist) and Dr Aileen Duffton (Lead Research Radiographer). Additional academic supervision and mentorship will be provided by Prof Anthony Chalmers (Chair of Clinical Oncology, University of Glasgow).
Teaching
There will be no regular commitment to teaching but research fellows are encouraged to contribute to both problem-based learning and clinical teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students when research commitments allow.
Assessment of Progress
- Progress meetings with supervisors on a monthly basis.
- Research in Progress presentations to the Radiotherapy Research Group.
- Reports/manuscripts of results of research undertaken, as appropriate.
- General assessment during clinical work and meetings.
Future
On completion of the post, Fellows will either return to run-through training, or be supported in applying for further internal or externally funded fellowship to undertake a MD or PhD, or may become eligible for an academic training post.
Terms & Conditions
Salary will be on the Clinical Academic Scale£51,348 - £77,389 per annum.
This post is full time (35 Hours Per Week) and fixed term for up to 12 months.
Although this activity constitutes part of the job, the management of the clinical activity will be the full responsibility of the NHS Organisation. In the unlikely event that the NHS Organisation withdraws the honorary contract, the University will not be able to continue this post and notice of termination will be served.
The post will carry an additional entitlement depending on on-call responsibilities. This banding payment is paid under a separate arrangement with the NHS for which the University acts as paymaster only.
