Overview
The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine is seeking to recruit a dynamic and motivated Clinician to join the Small Animal Surgery team. The post is based at the award-winning Small Animal Hospital on the Garscube estate. The role is full-time and open-ended; part-time work will be considered.

Responsibilities
- Provide a high-quality surgery service and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners to maintain a clinical referral workload supporting commercial, teaching and research activities.
- Support development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and enhance the service’s income generation capability.
- Contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.
- Participate in the out-of-hours service, ensuring adequate cover for direct supervision, advice and expertise when required.
- Support planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements for clinical scholars, supervising clinical duties and research projects toward successful completion of Board examinations.
- Engage in national/international professional bodies related to surgery service where appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with continuing professional development requirements of the speciality and the RCVS.
- Participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.
Teaching
- Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with course leaders.
- Develop creative and innovative teaching and learning approaches in line with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy to maintain or improve educational opportunities.
- Contribute to the delivery of a range of assessment activities, participate in examinations as appropriate, and provide effective feedback to support learning.
Clinical Research/Scholarship
- Collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine with external recognition and publish in high-quality refereed journals and/or textbooks.
- Attend and participate in national/international events, seminars and conferences within the service area.
Administration
- Develop material to promote the surgery service at conferences and electronically.
- Undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division and contribute to performance and development review processes in line with university strategy.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Grade 7: A veterinary degree registerable with RCVS; completion of a recognised residency training programme.
- Grade 8: A veterinary degree registerable with RCVS; ECVS Diploma or RCVS CertAVP in small animal surgery (orthopaedics or soft tissue).
Desirable
- PhD (or other evidence of research training).
- Relevant teaching qualification.
Skills
- Essential: High standard of communication, teamwork, and ability to provide specialist level veterinary care; self-motivation, strategic planning, and ability to work independently.
- Desirable: Presentation skills; experience with databases and IT applications.
Experience
- Essential: Postgraduate clinical experience in surgery; evidence of clinical publications.
- Grade 8: Teaching experience in the HE sector.
Notes
- Candidates meeting residency and Board eligibility may be appointed at Grade 7 and promoted to Grade 8 upon passing Board exams; relevant experience may be considered for Grade 7.
