The predicted salary is between 33900 - 44000 £ per year.

To contribute to the activities of the Division of Small Animal Clinical Studies, School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine by delivering an effective and efficient high quality, small animal primary care practice based at the Small Animal Hospital and serving the surrounding area. The practice's values will reflect those of the Division: delivery of high quality patient care through the application of evidence-based medicine and a high standard of customer service; provision of a fulfilling student learning experience; and personnel development through engagement with scholarship. It is anticipated that the practice will contribute to the Division's and School's activities in the following areas:

  • Teaching and assessment of students, focusing on final year students in a practice setting.
  • Supporting and increasing the caseload of the Small Animal Hospital.
  • Enhancement of the Division's and School's reputation through delivery of high quality patient care and customer service.
  • Collaborative research and scholarship in an appropriate area of professional education and/or animal health.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:
  1. To contribute to the development of a dynamic, high quality, small animal primary care practice based at the Small Animal Hospital and serving the surrounding area.
  2. To develop and continually update personal skills and knowledge as appropriate to small animal practice in support of clinical, teaching and scholarship activities.
  3. To support the development of clinical activity which stimulates growth in practice caseload and Small Animal Hospital caseload through referral of patients.
  4. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the practice.
  5. To ensure compliance with the clinical quality assurance measures in place and validated.
  6. To provide support to staff associated with the practice.
  7. To develop a prominent professional profile locally and nationally/internationally, focusing on areas where there is synergy with the Division's and School's activities.
  8. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in relationship to membership and to maintenance of any postgraduate qualifications.
Teaching:
  1. To contribute to the planning, organisation, delivery and development of the School's learning and teaching activities, focusing on final year BVMS students in the practice setting, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders.
  2. To contribute to the delivery of a range of assessment activities (using a variety of methods and techniques), engage fully in the examination process and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
  3. To develop, and encourage the development of, creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
Scholarship:
  1. To complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and other components of the Early Career Development Programme at the University of Glasgow.
  2. To engage in personal scholarship which is synergistic with day-to-day activities resulting in personal development and an enhanced external reputation.
  3. To develop opportunities for interdisciplinary and collaborative clinical or educational research, primarily with staff within the Division, School and wider University but also with staff in other Schools, Colleges, Universities and other clinical organisations where appropriate.
  4. To contribute to clinical research projects/trials through input to design, application for funding, execution and dissemination of findings.
  5. To attend and actively contribute/participate in national/international events/seminars/conferences as appropriate to area of scholarship by invitation or otherwise.
Administration:
  1. To contribute to the management of a dynamic, high quality, small animal primary care practice based at the Small Animal Hospital and serving the surrounding area, ensuring that it runs efficiently.
  2. To contribute to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' Practice Standards Awards as necessary.
  3. Participate in the performance and development review processes of staff working within the practice in accordance with University Strategy.
  4. To act, as directed by the Head of Division, to advance the personal development of staff working within the practice.

In addition to the above for appointment at Grade 8:

  1. Undertake the duties in an independent manner exercising relevant professional judgement and experience.
  2. Develop novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment that leads to the development of clinical activity which stimulates growth in practice caseload and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.
  3. To ensure direct supervision, advice and expertise is provided for the team.
  4. To provide scholarship and mentorship to junior clinical staff, staff associated with the small animal practice and assist with the identification, planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements by supervision of clinical duties and research projects.
  5. To lead and secure funding for clinical research projects.
  6. Contribute to the performance and development review processes of staff working within the practice in accordance with University Strategy.
  7. To deliver a range of teaching assessment activities (using a variety of methods and techniques) and engage fully in the examination process and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:
  1. Veterinary degree, registerable with the RCVS prior to commencing employment.
Desirable:
  1. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, Recognising Excellence in Teaching or equivalent.
  2. Qualified Companion Animal OV.

For appointment at Grade 8:

Desirable:
  1. Evidence of training and experience in research (MSc/PhD or equivalent).

  1. Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality clinical service in small animal primary care practice.
  2. Broad expertise of small animal practice, corresponding to training, experience and qualifications.
  3. High standard of oral and written communication skills and presentation skills.

  2. Evidence of participation in initiatives which resulted in an increase in practice caseload.
  3. Business management relevant to small animal primary care practice.
  4. Evidence of experience in teaching, especially of veterinary undergraduate students.

  1. Evidence of leadership or significant contribution to outputs of publications in high quality refereed journals and/or textbooks.
Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7/8, £39,347 - £44,263/£48,350 - £56,021 per annum, depending on experience. This post is open ended and full time, 35 hours per week condensed hours worked over 4 days per week and 1 in 4 Saturday mornings, it will involve 1-2 evenings per week to be mutually agreed with the successful candidate.
