We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Lecturer in Hepatology and Gastroenterology in the School of Infection. The role involves taking the lead in writing manuscripts for submission to appropriate peer‑reviewed journals, preparing research reports, progress summaries, and contributing to grant applications as directed by the PI. The postholder will present work at internal and external seminars, and at national and international conferences, to enhance the profile of the research group and their academic standing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking clinical duties in Hepatology and Gastroenterology within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde under an honorary clinical contract.
  • Maintaining clinical competencies and meeting General Medical Council (GMC) licensing requirements.
  • Participating in out‑of‑hours commitments as required and agreed with local NHS management.
  • Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Hepatology and Gastroenterology.
  • Supervising undergraduate or postgraduate student projects in relevant research topics.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and participating in team meetings and departmental activities.
  • Engaging with the SCREDS programme requirements as specified by NHS Education for Scotland.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • MBChB or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • Currently enrolled in a specialty training programme in Gastroenterology or Hepatology in Scotland.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification, or willingness to complete prior to commencement.
  • Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) in a relevant biomedical discipline.

Desirable:

  • BSc (Hons) or intercalated degree in a relevant biomedical science.
  • Evidence of academic distinction.
  • PhD and relevant research in hepatology.

Skills

Essential:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of self‑motivation and originality.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Ability to engage critically with scientific literature.

Desirable:

  • Experience with clinical research methodology.
  • Competence in upper GI endoscopy or colonoscopy.
  • Experience with IBD/liver/NHS patient cohorts.

Experience

Essential:

  • Sufficient clinical experience in Gastroenterology, Hepatology or a closely related specialty.
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical research focused on hepatology.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in teaching or clinical supervision.
  • Previous experience in preparing ethics or grant applications.
  • Track record of peer‑reviewed publication or conference presentation.

General Information

The post is funded by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) with a salary of approximately £60,000 per annum, on the Clinical Academic Scale £49,492 – £74,591 per annum. Opportunities for NHS salary supplements may be available by negotiation with local NHS management.

Other Requirements

The University of Glasgow requires all employees to be eligible to live and work in the UK; a Skilled Worker visa may be required. All staff in regulated roles must hold a valid PVG Scheme membership in accordance with the Disclosure (Scotland) Act 2020.
