Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a strong understanding of 4-H and/or conducting educational programs.

Successful candidates must be able to facilitate traditional camp activities (workshops, field trips, recreational activities) and facilitate rainy day alternative activities in the event of inclement weather. They must also support camping programmatic responsibilities related to positive youth development and program planning for overall organizational systems. Summer camp staff will work with the 4‑H Extension Agent and the 4‑H Program Assistant to meet affirmative action compliance standards and the University of Florida’s Youth Protection Policy, which includes direct supervision and transport of minors ages 8 to 18 years. Safeguarding the health and safety of youth and volunteer leaders, enforcing rules, and adhering to transport policies are essential duties. Candidates must adapt quickly to schedule changes and demonstrate willingness to learn positive youth development principles, life-skill development, and the mission of Florida 4‑H. They may also be required to perform other duties as assigned by the 4‑H Extension Agent or County Extension Director.

Program development includes learning 4‑H youth development subject matter, complying with youth programming standards, participating in orientation and ongoing training, and understanding emergency and risk management policies. Maintaining a clean work appearance per the Florida 4‑H Camping Dress Code is required.

Expected Salary: $14 per hour

Required Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a strong understanding of 4‑H and/or conducting educational programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent strongly desired.
  • Experience coordinating and implementing educational programs is strongly desired.
  • Possess Lifeguard and CPR/First Aid training and certification.
  • Ability to work with and instruct youth through innovative and non-formal methods.
  • Experience working with diverse youth and adult audiences; cooperate with other summer camp staff and office personnel.
  • Ability to interact with the public positively and effectively to establish and maintain relationships.
  • Skill in the use of standard office equipment and computer software applications/equipment.

Work conditions: exposure to environmental changes such as outdoor weather, field conditions, extreme noises, odors, and/or dust.

Risk and safety conditions: exposure to physical health and safety risks such as use of firearms, livestock, watercraft equipment, etc.

Essential physical activities: stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, grasping, hearing, talking, seeing up close and far, kneeling, reaching, pulling, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. May require frequent lifting and pushing of 10-25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Communication Contacts: are typically with 4‑H families, co-workers, county personnel, and members of the general public to provide services, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Creativity, Strategy And Leadership: Assist the 4‑H Extension Agent to evaluate ongoing camping programs and develop new programs to serve the community.

Supervision: Provide verbal and written instructions for workforce development and program delivery. Additional instructions may be provided as needed. Must work independently and in a team. This position reports directly to the 4‑H Youth Development Agent; the County Extension Director supervises indirectly.

Normal Work Schedule: Typical schedule: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM; Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Irregular work hours after 4:30 PM and occasionally before 7:00 AM, Monday-Thursday, may be required as requested by the immediate supervisor.

Required Licenses, Certifications, And Other Specific Requirements Of Law: Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position for travel to county, district, and state events and other duties. Background check and fingerprinting required along with completion of the University of Florida’s Youth Protection Training Certificate (#YCS800).
