Detailed Job Description:

As a PhD Researcher supporting the Department of Computer Science at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, you will take full academic, investigative, and technical ownership of designing uncertainty-aware synchronization frameworks for sustainable data centre digital twins. Your day-to-day responsibilities include conducting comprehensive literature reviews, formulating mathematical models, developing simulation environments, analyzing complex operational telemetry, and collaborating directly with an elite supervisory team comprising Dr Huma Samin, Dr John Panneerselvam, and Prof Khurram Bhatti. You will operate in a collaborative academic research environment while partnering closely with industry partners and doctoral peers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct advanced doctoral research focusing on uncertainty-aware synchronization models for sustainable data centre digital twins.

  • Formulate rigorous mathematical and algorithmic frameworks to capture stochastic behaviors and environmental variables in data centres.

  • Design, build, and evaluate software simulation models, digital twin prototypes, and data processing pipelines.

  • Analyze large-scale operational datasets, energy consumption metrics, and workload patterns to optimize data centre sustainability.

  • Collaborate closely with supervisory team members Dr Huma Samin, Dr John Panneerselvam, and Prof Khurram Bhatti during research cycles.

  • Author high-impact peer-reviewed research papers for publication in leading international computer science journals and conferences.

  • Present research findings at prestigious academic conferences, departmental seminars, and EPSRC stakeholder workshops.

  • Maintain meticulous research logs, source code repositories, experimental data sets, and doctoral progress reports.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • First-class or upper second-class Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline.

  • Relevant postgraduate Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Advanced Computing with distinction or merit.

  • Strong, demonstrable operational expertise in software development, algorithm design, and computational modeling.

  • Comprehensive working knowledge and practical proficiency in Python, C++, or equivalent programming languages for research prototyping.

  • Deep practical understanding of distributed systems, cloud computing, IoT, data analytics, or digital twin architectures.

  • Solid practical grasp of academic research methodologies, statistical analysis, and technical scientific writing.

  • Exceptional analytical problem-solving aptitude, intellectual curiosity, and professional communication capabilities.

  • Mandatory legal eligibility and academic standing for doctoral research studentship enrollment at the University of Exeter (September 2027 intake).

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Prior research experience or publication record in digital twins, data centre energy efficiency, or distributed synchronization algorithms.

  • Hands-on familiarity with machine learning frameworks, time-series forecasting, and uncertainty quantification techniques.

  • Experience utilizing version control systems (Git), containerization tools (Docker), and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.

  • Prior professional working experience in software engineering, data analytics, or technology consulting environments.

  • Active engagement in open-source software development or collaborative academic research initiatives.
