The School of Life Sciences is large and diverse, providing a vibrant research and teaching environment. We conduct research in four main areas comprising: Ecology and Environmental Microbiology, Genomics and Computational Biology, Plant Productivity, and Protein Structure and Mechanisms of Disease. All our research groups are highly active and well placed to deliver an excellent performance in the next Research Excellence Framework (REF). Teaching is informed by our research, and students develop a range of analytical, laboratory and field skills.

The School of Life Sciences is seeking to appoint a fixed-term lecturer with expertise in Marine Biology and Ecology. Our guiding principle is “excellence in research, excellence in education”. We expect the successful candidate to deliver relevant and inspiring teaching on one or more of our degree courses, at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The postholder will support students, provide assessment and participate in recruitment activities.

The main areas in which the successful candidate would teach include ecology and conservation across a range of marine ecosystems. They would be expected to supervise project students and contribute to residential field courses in the UK and potentially overseas. They would be expected to lead the module “coral reef research skills (virtual field course)”. They should apply their skills and experience to contribute to the delivery of a transformational education in ecology and environmental biology with a focus on marine biology.

The successful candidate would be expected to participate in recruitment and outreach activities at the request of the Head of School and Director of Recruitment.

Skills and qualifications required:

The successful person will have a relevant doctoral level degree or equivalent professional experience or practice. A SCUBA diving qualification that allows the candidate to contribute to field courses is desirable.

The successful person will have experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways. They will have experience of contributing to designing and planning learning activities, developing effective learning environments (face to face and/or virtual) and approaches to student support and guidance.
