The Group Accountant sits within the Financial Accounting and Capital team in the wider Finance, Planning and Data Insight section which has responsibility for managing the University’s income and expenditure, ensuring we get value for money in all financial activity and that we comply with all statutory and regulatory requests. Responsibility extends to the collection and sharing of information and understanding to help the University achieve its strategic aims.
Duties of the Role
The role will take a professional lead on subsidiary accounting and the consolidation of subsidiary companies within the University of Essex group, ensuring that all subsidiary companies are properly administered and comply with policy, charity law, company law, and other relevant legislation and regulation. The post holder will be mainly responsible for the financial management and administrative oversight of some of the subsidiary undertakings, ensuring the financial interaction between the entities is recorded on a sound financial basis and ensuring full consolidation into the University of Essex group accounts. In addition, the post holder will provide support to other projects being undertaken by the University or its subsidiaries, including producing budgets, cash flow information and supporting the preparation of business cases.
Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate should hold a CCAB level qualification or be working towards it, or have substantial equivalent professional experience. Strong IT skills are required, especially regarding the use of spreadsheets and financial management systems, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Strong communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work to demanding deadlines.
