University of East London (UEL) is seeking a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Counselling to contribute to teaching, research, clinical supervision, and academic leadership across undergraduate and postgraduate counselling provision. Teaching will be delivered primarily face-to-face at Stratford Campus, with some online delivery as required. The post holder will engage in scholarly activity and contribute to the continued development and growth of the counselling portfolio and the wider research culture of the Department and School.

The School of Childhood and Social Care brings together expertise from psychology, education, social work, counselling, and social care to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, enrich the student experience, and strengthen community engagement. The school supports professional education, applied research, and practice-based learning within the Stratford Health Campus.

We are seeking a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Counselling to contribute to teaching, research, clinical supervision, and academic leadership across our undergraduate and postgraduate counselling provision. The post holder will contribute to the academic, professional, research, and administrative activities of the Counselling Cluster within the Department of Social Work, Counselling and Social Care, and, where appropriate, across the wider School. The role includes module leadership, teaching across a range of counselling-related subjects, assessment and feedback, supervision of student research projects, and participation in admissions, recruitment, and academic administration.

Responsibilities include:

  • Deliver teaching and assessment across counselling-related subjects.
  • Provide high-quality clinical supervision and support students to integrate theory, research, and professional practice in line with BACP and other relevant professional standards.
  • Engage in scholarly activity and contribute to the development of the counselling portfolio and wider research culture.
  • Lead modules, supervise student research projects, and participate in admissions, recruitment, and academic administration.
  • Contribute to cross-institutional teaching, research, and professional activities across the Counselling Cluster and School.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, student-focused academic and practitioner who is passionate about counselling education, clinical practice, and widening participation in higher education. You will hold a BACP-accredited postgraduate qualification in Counselling and Psychotherapy and/or Counselling and Coaching and be qualified to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will be registered with a relevant professional body (preferably BACP), ideally accredited or eligible to apply for accreditation. You will have significant experience of counselling practice, along with experience of teaching and/or training in higher education or a comparable professional context. Experience of clinical supervision, research supervision, module leadership, and curriculum development is highly desirable. Strong commitment to scholarly activity and professional development. Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills; a clear commitment to inclusive, ethical, and reflective practice. Understanding of, and commitment to, supporting diverse student cohorts and working flexibly (including occasional evenings and Saturdays).
