We are seeking an exceptional University Fire Safety Adviser to join the Health & Safety team at the University of Dundee. In this role, you will play a vital role in protecting our people, places and reputation by helping to create a safe and resilient University environment.

About the role

As University Fire Safety Adviser, you will play an important role within the Health & Safety team, as the University's competent person and professional lead for fire safety, ensuring the development, implementation and continual improvement of the University's fire safety management systems. You will work closely with our Estates and Campus Services, network of Health & Safety Advisers, Faculties and Professional Services. Contributing to the overall University Health & Safety Strategy and ongoing priorities.

Key responsibilities

  • To undertake the functions of a 'competent person' in relation to such duties as required under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.
  • To develop and ensure the University of Dundee Fire Safety Management system is maintained up to date.
  • Responsible for developing and completing the Fire Risk Assessment (FRAs)Programme for the University of Dundee.
  • Responsible for providing advice and support to the Faculties and Professional Services in the implementation of fire safety in their areas.
  • Supporting the completion of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) in conjunction with Disability Services.
  • To conduct fire safety audits, inspections, investigations, surveys etc.
  • To prepare quarterly and annual reports detailing the recommendations for continual fire safety improvements and mitigation strategies.
  • Support the implementation and completion of the DSEAR risk assessment programme at University of Dundee.

Who we're looking for essential

  • IQ Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety or other fire safety level 4 qualification.
  • Meets the Competency Criteria for Fire Risk Assessors under BS 8674:2025.
  • Graduate or equivalent relevant experience with membership of at least one relevant professional organisation e.g. IFE, IFSM.
  • Substantial, recent experience of undertaking a fire safety advisory role, or similar in a large complex organisation, working with key stakeholders.
  • Experience of developing, reviewing and implementing fire safety management systems and fire related policies and technical guidance.
  • In-depth experience of the completion of fire risk assessments, to include the development of fire risk assessment programmes and the completion of associated actions in large complex premises / organisations.
  • Experience of developing and implementing fire safety related audit programmes.
  • Able to design and deliver suitable training courses to a diverse range of people.
  • Can demonstrate broad based administrative experience in a professional or specialist service in a large complex organisation e.g. Higher Education.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret fire safety designs, to include the completion of fire safety strategies.
  • Able to advise and adopt a pragmatic approach to deliver realistic, workable and practical solutions to fire safety that take into consideration the risk and business need.
  • Excellent oral and written communication that demonstrates the ability to analyse, interpret and present complex fire safety data and information in a readily understandable manner.
