The post holder will work closely with the Head of M.B. Ch.B., Learning and Teaching Support Senior Manager, and NHS Tayside Directorate of Medical Education and be part of the team of academic and administrative staff who support a number of undergraduate programmes in the School of Medicine.

The post holder will undertake assessments of clinical areas within NHS Tayside, mapping out potential accessibility issues that may affect students with a wide variety of disabilities. This mapping will form part of a database which the post holder will develop, in addition to a report of each area.

This will involve considering various issues such as:

  • the need to negotiate stairs
  • accommodation
  • public transport
  • closeness of disabled parking
  • disabled toilet access
  • fire evacuation plans
  • potential infection, prevention, and control issues

A key requirement for this post will be the ability to balance priorities and respond flexibly to the varying and evolving needs of undergraduate education.

This is a possible secondment opportunity for NHS employees and the potential candidates may wish to seek approval from their NHS Line Manager before applying.

The postholder will be based in the School of Medicine, Ninewells Hospital and will be line managed by Emma Crouch, Learning and Teaching Support Senior Manager, however will also report to Dr Jo Sloan (Head of M.B. Ch.B.). This role will be part of the Professional Services Team.

The post holder will also be expected to:

  • Liaise with academic leads, MBChB administrative staff, clinicians (nursing, medical and others) and other relevant groups to help with the identification of access requirements to ensure appropriate learning opportunities for students in teaching, clinical and social care areas.
  • Produce reports on accessibility across the Ninewells Campus and NHS Tayside for clinical and social care placements.
  • Be part of the wider team in the School of Medicine and contribute to wider divisional activities such as OSCEs/written exam invigilation, Open Days and any other relevant duties.
  • Work closely with the academic team and professional services, leading on student adjustments and the cascading of this information to relevant parties.
  • Chair the Disability Adjustments Working Group, ensuring that all new adjustments have approval, with outcome letters sent to students.
  • Develop close contact with clinical areas to optimise learning opportunities for students.
  • Meet with students and support them with choosing and accessing placements.
  • Develop a database of findings in each clinical area and ensure this information is updated regularly.
  • Complete reports for all assessments and ensure that these are stored on the VLE, to allow students to review.
  • Work closely with the Directorate of Medical Education and ensure that reports and the database are accessible to NHS staff.
  • Attend relevant meetings and committees as required.
  • Any other duties as directed by the Head or M.B. Ch.B. or the Learning and Teaching Support Senior Manager.

Note: The post holder will be part of the Medical School supporting various Medical School activities. The duties of the post outlined above are not exhaustive and the post holder will be expected to be cooperative and flexible, undertaking such other duties as may reasonably be required of a member of the administrative team.

These duties will be subject to review in line with the changing requirements of the School and Institution, and with the development needs of the post-holder as identified through the appraisal process.
