Our Campus Life and Student Living department is responsible for essential services that significantly impact the student experience.

Campus Life is all about the various services that enhance the overall student experience, including sports, recreational facilities and community engagement.

Our security team are key to the University\’s success. Generally being the first interaction our customers and visitors will have with us, the service they receive will shape their experience.

The full time hours for this role are 37 hours per week, working fixed Night shifts between the hours of 20:30 and 07:00; on a 4 on, 4 off rotation. The salary advertised also includes a 15% shift allowance.

You will be responsible for providing a welcoming, safe and secure environment, whilst encouraging all site users to promote a secure environment through their own conduct. You will also be responsible for providing advice, guidance, and support on all security related matters, across multiple sites, ensuring continued excellence in performance, profile and service at all times. Your role will be key to ensuring excellent security services delivery and pivotal in leading our security services delivery.

To be successful in this role, you will need a full, clean UK driving licence to support operational flexibility. You will have demonstrable experience in team-oriented environments, where collaboration and effective communication were key to achieving shared goals.

You will have worked in a fast-paced security setting, with hands-on experience or a busy customer facing role. Your background will include delivering front line security or customer service experience. Ideally, you will have planned and delivered proactive patrol strategies, aligned to specific risk profiles, and adapted them as needed based on dynamic security demands.

Furthermore, you will be proficient in compiling comprehensive reports, as well as conducting initial investigations into security breaches or incidents of crime. Your analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to remain calm under pressure will be essential in contributing to the safety and integrity of the organisation.

  • To be part of a high-profile Security Team, ensuring a 24hr point of contact and response service across all areas of the University and Halls of Residence; maintaining and promoting the safety and security of all University property, facilities and equipment, and that of all associated users and p roviding in-person emergency response across any location if required.
  • To encourage and ensure as far as reasonably practicable, a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all users of the University and Halls of Residence sites.
  • Encourage all users to promote a secure environment through their own conduct, by providing advice, guidance and support for all security related matters.
  • Identify, investigate and report all matters of concern regarding security, and deal with all incidents of crime and anti-social behavior.
  • Conduct investigations into all breaches of security and student discipline, providing comprehensive reports, assisting in enabling further action and identifying crime trends.
  • To provide support for Halls of Residence activities related to maintaining Health and Safety requirements, particularly out of term activities relating to compliance requirements under Health and Safety. In particular the requirement for out of term Legionella Management tasks.
  • Liaise and assist, where appropriate, with the Police and other external agencies in investigating all criminal activity affecting the University and its users.
  • Undertake regular patrols of all University and DSRL buildings and grounds, checking the security and safety of all property and contents.
  • To support service delivery by S2 staff and promote student wellbeing amongst the student community within Halls of Residence sites. To report on student behaviour concerns with the Halls of Residence sites to S2 Staff, Hall Managers or Welfare Team.
  • To ensure a customer focused and positive experience for all students residing in DSRL Halls of Residence upholding the Universities values and behaviours.
  • To conduct regular overnight patrols of all university halls of residence sites.
  • Night duties to predominantly focus on providing visible presence at halls of residence sites and support DSRL S2 staff.
  • To undertake car parking management duties, including staffing the main gatehouse and ensuring vehicles parked on University of Derby premises have valid permits.
  • Provide a dedicated University key-holder service. Ensuring the timely locking and unlocking of all areas and buildings.
  • Ensure the effective operation of all Security related equipment including alarms, CCTV, Access Control, Communication technology and car park management systems, reporting any defects timely.
  • To provide support and relief cover in the Security Control Room as and when required.
  • Ensure a 24-hour point of contact and response service across all areas of the University.
  • Undertake vehicular access control duties and assist in monitoring and enforcing University parking regulations.
  • To drive University vehicles to assist in undertaking security duties.
  • Maintain security databases, reports and events logs.
  • Act as a first Aider after appropriate training.
  • Evaluate all requirements surrounding requests, or otherwise, to activate call out procedures for tradesmen, and contractors, and emergency plans amongst others.
  • To be prepared to adjust working hours and arrangements were necessary.
  • To undertake any other duties as seen appropriate by the Head of Security.
  • Proven experience in a similar customer facing or Security orientated role
  • Proven experience of providing excellent customer service in a busy customer service environment
  • Proven experience of conducting minor investigations and compiling written reports

Skills, knowledge and abilities

  • Ability to handle incidents in a busy and often unpredictable environment.
  • Ability to deal with conflict and difficult situations in a calm and effective manner
  • Ability to offer exceptional customer service and engagement with students, staff and visitors across all University estates

Business requirements

  • Willingness and flexibility to travel and work between University and external sites in a cost effective and timely manner
  • Completed Basic DBS Check
