Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Associate/Clinical Research Training Fellow to join the Conway Morris lab for a period of 2 years, potentially extendable to a 3rd year subject to availability of additional funds. This post offers an exciting opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research into the diagnosis and management of severe lung infections, and to extend our understanding of the biology of these conditions.
Research Focus
The Conway Morris lab focuses on translational critical care biology, encompassing fundamental and applied neutrophil biology, infection and host:pathogen interactions, and the biology of pneumonia and lung injury. We utilize various tools including cellular models with healthy donor and patient donor cells, functional assays, proteomic, phosphoproteomic, and transcriptomic profiling to understand immune cell functions and dysfunctions in critical illness. Our group includes scientists and clinicians skilled in wet-lab and bioinformatic techniques, collaborating closely with NHS colleagues, infectious disease/microbiology researchers, and industry partners to bridge laboratory immunology and clinical diagnostics and treatments.
Collaborative Project
This position is part of the Bac2Bac project, a collaboration developing a novel optical diagnostic for lung infections led by Professor Kev Dhaliwal at the University of Edinburgh. The successful candidate will interact with research teams across Edinburgh, UCL, Manchester, Newcastle, and Belfast, contributing to sub-projects at each site. The Cambridge sub-project will focus on host and pathogen profiling of the lungs of enrolled patients, with opportunities to develop a thesis based on this work, tailored to the candidate’s skills and interests.
Training and Employment Details
Specific training in required techniques will be provided. The appointment is fixed-term for 2 years, funded initially. The role involves an integrated appointment with the University and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, including an Honorary Clinical Contract with the NHS Trust. Employment will be contingent on contract status with the NHS Trust.
