Lucy Cavendish College invites applications for a Junior Research Fellowship in one of the following subject areas:
- English with a focus on the Medieval or Early Modern Periods OR Literature from the African continent or Indian sub-continent in English or translation to English
- History with a focus on modern global history; applications from those studying African or Indian history are particularly welcome.
- Physical or environmental geography with a research focus on one or more of the following areas: climate change; quantitative approaches to environmental change; natural hazards.
Candidates must be early career researchers who have recently obtained their PhD (no more than 18-months post PhD) or whose viva is scheduled, with the requirement that their degree will be awarded by the start of the Fellowship. Candidates should not hold or have held a stipendiary research fellowship at another institution in the UK. The Fellowship is available for 3 years from the expected start date of 1 October 2027.
The stipend for the Research Fellowship will be £36,498 per annum. College is willing to discuss the holding of the Research Fellowship on a part-time basis. The Fellowship is not renewable. The Fellowship comes with an allowance of £4500 to support research activities and a generous meal allowance. The recipient is expected to participate fully in college life.
The purpose of the Fellowship is to engage in research and its dissemination, but there are opportunities to undertake limited hours of small group teaching within the college if the fellow wishes to do so. An additional payment will be made for any teaching delivered.

Long-listed candidates will be notified prior to the end of November 2026 and asked to provide a piece of written work (up to 10,000 words). This written work should be a previously prepared piece of work, with a maximum of 500 additional words putting the work into context. It can be a book chapter, thesis chapter or published article.
Interviews for short-listed candidates will be conducted February 2027.
