The role
We are looking for a new postdoctoral research associate/senior research associate to work on AI-driven downscaling of environmental variables for the health community. The topics covered in the positions may include the following:
- Extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, tropical cyclones
- Generative machine learning emulation of climate variables
- Climate model output analysis
- Exposure to climate hazards
- Climate epidemiology
The successful candidate will be guided by the project Principal Investigators, Dann Mitchell and Emily Vosper. They will take a lead role in collaborating with the other institutions and project partners. The expectation is that they will publish 1-2 papers through the duration of the post.
What will you be doing?
The position will be multidisciplinary and involve applying a diffusion model to climate model output to enhance the spatial and temporal resolution and using health data to calculate exposure for a variety of possible health outcomes including hospitalisations and maternal and birth outcomes such as preterm birth and low birth weight over the UK. It will be possible to also contribute to the further development of the diffusion model should they wish.
The exact details of the work can be found in the project proposal, which is available on request from Emily Vosper. The position is funded until March 30th 2028 (with a possibility of extension should bids for further funding be successful).
You should apply if
You have the following:
- Experience in analysing large datasets such as climate model, observation or reanalysis output
- Evidence of scientific excellence
- A relevant postgraduate research degree or equivalent professional experience in the research area required
- Have given presentations at conferences and have some publications in respected journals or equivalent in the field
- Evidence of ability to lead peer-reviewed publications
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
