Job Description:
The role
The successful candidate will be based in the Modern Synthetic Chemistry Laboratories in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol. Support for synthetic chemistry is excellent, with facilities including MS, NMR, X-ray, and preparative HPLC, supported by dedicated staff. Resources such as journals, SciFinder, and Reaxys are accessible online.
The position is available from 1st September 2025 for an initial 7 months. Applicants should include a cover letter, CV, and the names of two referees who have supervised synthetic organic chemistry projects.
Responsibilities:
Work with Prof. M. Carmen Galan on the chemical synthesis of biologically relevant oligosaccharides and glycan-based probes for diagnostics. This BBSRC IAA-funded project is part of a multidisciplinary research program.
Candidate Requirements:
Experience in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry, bioconjugation, and structural characterization is essential. Microbiology experience is advantageous. Candidates must have a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. Experience with enzymatic synthesis is desirable. The candidate should demonstrate a strong work ethic, collaborative spirit, and adherence to safety standards. Responsibilities include laboratory management and supervising undergraduate students.
