The Electrical Energy Management Group (EEMG) is home to over 50 researchers working on low carbon electrical systems, enabled by advanced, compact and highly efficient electrical machines and power electronic conversion. We're looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer or Experimental Officer to join the Technical Services team which supports the daily operations of our laboratories; designing, manufacturing, testing, and analysing novel electrical systems.
What will you be doing? This role will support the EEMG by:
- Inducting and training academic researchers in practical electrical fundamentals, electrical safety systems and good laboratory practice.
- Helping to meet electrical safety requirements through first-principles assessment in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, while also drawing on industrial best-practice and appropriate application of non-statutory regulations (e.g. BS7671 and EN60204) as appropriate for novel, experimental systems.
- Using expert knowledge to help turn abstract experimental requirements into functional research activities, participating as appropriate in the design, risk-assessment, assembly, commissioning and operation of novel electrical research apparatus and electrical safety systems in support of the above.
- Supervising general laboratory activities, ensuring compliance with applicable safety regulations.
You should apply if:
- You have hands-on experience with high-power electrical systems (e.g. drives, inverters, power converters or electric machine control systems) and are confident working with them from first principles.
- You have a strong understanding of health and safety requirements relevant to electrical design and installation, particularly the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
- You enjoy solving technical problems and supporting others — from advising researchers on novel applications to helping new students and staff use equipment safely.
- You're comfortable explaining complex technical concepts clearly to people with varying levels of expertise.
- You're keen to be part of a collaborative research environment and want to contribute to the development of cutting-edge low carbon electrical systems.
- You have experience or interest in specifying and purchasing specialist electrical equipment.
Additional information:
- Contract type: Open-ended
- Work pattern: Full-time / 35 hours per week
- Grade: K
- School/Unit: Faculty of Science and Engineering
