Two Prestigious Governance Opportunities at the University of Bristol. Are you a senior professional with a passion for strategic oversight, financial integrity, and public service? The University of Bristol is seeking two exceptional individuals to serve as Independent Co-opted Members on its Audit and Risk Committee (ARC) and Finance and Investments Committee (FIC). These voluntary, non-executive positions offer a rare opportunity to shape the future of a world-leading university, supporting its long-term resilience and civic mission.

About the University: Founded in 1876, the University of Bristol is a top 10 UK university and ranked 51st globally (QS 2026). Known for its academic excellence, pioneering research, and social commitment, Bristol was the first UK university to admit men and women on an equal basis. Today, it leads in fields such as climate action, health, human rights, and digital innovation.

A key example of its research strength is the Isambard AI project, one of the UK’s most powerful artificial intelligence supercomputing initiatives. Based at Bristol, Isambard AI is designed to accelerate breakthroughs in areas such as machine learning, drug discovery, and climate modelling, positioning the University at the forefront of responsible AI research and national technological advancement. With a £1.1 billion annual budget and over 8,800 staff, the University plays a vital role in Bristol’s economic, social, and cultural life.

Governance and Committees: The University’s Board of Trustees provides strategic leadership and ensures effective governance. Supporting the Board are seven specialist committees, including ARC and FIC, which play key roles in maintaining transparency, accountability, and long-term success. Each is chaired by an Independent Trustee and supported by the University Secretary & Director of Governance and a dedicated professional team.

About the Roles:

  • Audit and Risk Committee (ARC): ARC provides independent assurance on internal control, risk management, and audit processes. Members help safeguard financial integrity and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks. Ideal candidates will have:
  • A recognised professional qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIA)
  • Senior experience in audit, risk, or assurance
  • Strategic insight into IT governance, cyber, or capital project risk
  • Board or committee experience in complex organisations
  • Experience in higher education is welcome but not essential - what matters is your ability to offer rigorous scrutiny and independent challenge.
  • Finance and Investments Committee (FIC): FIC oversees the University’s financial strategy, investment portfolio, and capital expenditure. Members advise on major projects and ensure financial sustainability aligned with institutional priorities. We welcome applicants with:
  • Strong finance, accounting, or investment credentials (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CFA, CIMA)
  • Experience managing large capital or infrastructure programmes
  • Expertise in treasury, pensions, or tax
  • Senior leadership or governance experience in finance or investment.

Time Commitment and Terms:

  • ARC: Around 5 meetings and Away Days annually
  • FIC: Around 4-5 meetings annually
  • Term: Up to 3 years, renewable subject to operational needs and performance
  • Remuneration: Voluntary, with reasonable expenses reimbursed
  • Comprehensive induction and ongoing development are provided.

Why Join? These roles offer exceptional opportunities to:

  • Apply your expertise in audit, risk, or finance to a world-class institution
  • Influence strategic decisions with lasting civic and educational impact
  • Collaborate with senior leaders and external experts
  • Contribute to ethical, sustainable higher education governance
  • Play a part in two landmark developments shaping the University’s future:
  • The Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, opening in Autumn 2026 - a £500 million investment creating a transformative seven-acre site beside Brunel’s Temple Meads station, dedicated to digital innovation, research, and enterprise.
  • The Mumbai Enterprise Campus, opening in Summer 2026, the University’s first international campus, developed with Indian partners and government bodies. This milestone in Bristol’s transnational education strategy reflects shared strengths in technology, innovation, and the arts.
