The Payroll and Pensions department pays approximately 2000 employees on a monthly basis (salaried and casuals). We strive to deliver an excellent service to all staff, assisting them through various stages of their work lifecycle. We’ve recently gone live with a new HRP system and are now in the process of embedding the system into our daily operations.

The University of Bradford is seeking a Deputy Payroll and Pensions Manager to support the delivery of a high-quality, compliant payroll service. This role requires you to be the primary contact for the Payroll & Pensions team. You will provide expertise in a professional and technical manner, and support the team during the preparation of the monthly payroll. With a high level of technical knowledge around Pay As You Earn legislation, you will work with a wide range of people on various tasks, including providing complex tax, national insurance and pension information in a simple to understand format. You will liaise directly with People Services, third-party agencies such as HMRC and with the various Pension providers on all matters pay and pension related. The role requires you to self-manage your workload and the workload of a small team of Payroll & Pensions Officers. You will be the key point of contact for complex and technical queries.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Level 3 qualification (e.g. A level/BTEC level 3, T level, Advanced apprenticeship) or similar.
  • Experience of processing payroll and pensions information and working in a payroll and/or Pensions team.
  • Experience of submitting monthly pension returns – ideally LGPS (Local Government Pension Scheme) & USS (Universities Superannuation Scheme).
  • In-depth knowledge of PAYE legislation and current pension legislation.
  • Experience in managing and leading a team, including delegating tasks, developing other people and fostering collaborations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to use Windows based software applications and payroll systems/pension administration portals.
