Overview
In this role you lead a trial management team within the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit to oversee a portfolio of cancer trials from concept to completion. You work with the Trials Unit Directors to grow the portfolio, ensure compliance with regulations, and contribute to study design, grant applications, and dissemination of results. You manage staff, budgets, and resources, representing the team on committees and driving a quality management system. This is a high-impact, cross-functional role at a leading university research unit.

Responsibilities
- Lead a trial management team handling a portfolio of clinical trial protocols (primarily cancer)
- Report to the CRCTU Director of Operations and collaborate with deputy Directors
- Develop the team’s research portfolio and provide specialist trial management advice to investigators
- Contribute to new research proposals, grant design and proposals, and contract reviews with governance teams
- Prioritise projects, allocate resources, monitor milestones, and advise on corrective actions
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and internal quality standards across trials
- Supervise trial coordinators, review documentation, and participate in Trial Management Group as needed
- Engage with funders and external service providers; liaison with internal university/ NHS bodies
- Coordinate high-importance trials; oversee staff development, training, and line management
- Represent CRCTU at meetings, contribute to committees, and develop quality management system policies
- Develop expert knowledge in trial management and contribute to SOPs and quality control documents
- Plan financially for new studies, negotiate budgets, and monitor expenditures
- Communicate policy decisions to staff and support unit reporting and fundraising activities
- Keep up-to-date with trial methodology, disease literature, and regulatory changes
- Support equality, diversity, and inclusion initiatives and ensure compliance with policies
Key requirements
- Higher degree in a relevant biomedical subject with strong trial management experience or extensive experience in clinical trial management
- In-depth understanding of UK clinical trial regulations and trial management methodology
- Proven ability to coordinate academic clinical trials from design to publication; experience with protocols and CRFs
- Experience in grant writing and trial design is desirable
- Strong administrative, project management, and budget control skills
- Experience supervising and developing staff; recruitment and appraisals
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently, multitask, and prioritize under pressure
- Willingness to travel nationally and internationally as needed
