The University is situated in leafy Edgbaston and there are excellent transport links to our beautiful campus, including main bus routes and a train station on site. Background
Campus Services (CS) employs over 900 staff with a turnover exceeding £65m in the last financial year. CS plays a key role in the quality of the student, staff and visitor experience, providing services across diverse areas such as the University’s sporting facilities, food and beverage, cleaning, conferencing, hotel operations, day nurseries, Portering, post, branded and own-brand retail outlets, visitor services and attractions (e.g., Winterbourne House & Gardens), student housing, transport, waste disposal and recycling. CS is a highly commercial organisation operating within the University context and has an ambitious strategic agenda, in terms of growing our service profile across both our Birmingham and Dubai campuses.
Sport & Fitness is responsible for operating the University of Birmingham's extensive sport and recreation provision. It caters for the whole sports continuum from elite athlete to beginner; it supports 6,500 members, 40+ performance clubs, over 50 sports scholars and offers an extensive participation and intra-league programme. It stages big events for a number of British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), national governing bodies and external groups, with spectator numbers reaching 3,000 for an individual event and has recently hosted the Commonwealth games for Hockey and Squash competition as well as swimming and athletics training venues.
Role Summary
As a Sales Consultant, you will be working collaboratively with the wider team to help deliver the targets and objectives set out by the Sales Team Leader; your primary responsibility is to make a difference! Positively impacting individuals through the life affirming benefits of sport and fitness. You are the primary touch point to potential members for UoB Sport & Fitness. The role requires someone with an infectious passion for people. How successful you are in this role, will be measured by delivering on monthly sales team targets.
- Build awareness of and actively promote the UoB Sport & Fitness offering, contributing to the continued growth of our reputation for excellence.
- Engage prospective members through consultations, tours, presentations and one-to-one conversations, inspiring them to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle.
- Support the achievement of membership sales targets, with a particular focus on Staff and Community memberships, while promoting a retention-focused sales approach.
- Proactively identify and maximise opportunities to generate new business, convert enquiries, and upsell additional UoB Sport & Fitness services, including swimming lessons, classes, facility hire and other programmes.
- Manage prospective member journeys from initial enquiry through to membership purchase, delivering a positive and professional customer experience throughout.
- Ensure all leads, enquiries and prospective members are contacted promptly and followed up effectively to maximise conversion opportunities.
- Respond to incoming telephone, email, online and face-to-face enquiries in a professional and customer-focused manner.
- Maintain accurate records of leads, customer interactions and sales activity using the organisation's CRM and other systems.
- Work with the Sales Team Leader and wider marketing and membership teams to support lead generation campaigns and other sales initiatives.
- Represent and act as an ambassador for UoB Sport & Fitness at internal and external events, open days, and community engagement activities.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with members and prospective customers, encouraging advocacy, referrals and long-term engagement with UoB Sport & Fitness.
- Support the wider UoB Sport & Fitness team in delivering exceptional customer experiences and achieving departmental objectives.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
- Proven experience in a sales, customer-facing or business development role, preferably within leisure, fitness, hospitality or a related industry.
- Demonstrable ability to achieve individual and team sales targets.
- Excellent communication, influencing and relationship-building skills.
- Highly motivated, proactive and results-driven approach to work.
- Strong customer service and customer engagement skills.
- Ability to identify customer needs and confidently recommend suitable products and services.
- Effective organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple enquiries simultaneously.
- Experience of CRM systems and maintaining accurate customer records.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to team objectives.
- Minimum Grade C/4 in Mathematics and English at GCSE (or equivalent Level 2 qualification).
