Senior Research Technician – Department of Inflammation and Ageing – 106393 – Grade 5
Full time starting salary £29,647 to £31,460 with potential progression to £35,388. Fixed‑term contract until August 2030. Closing date 19 October 2025. Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, UK.
Position Details
Department of Inflammation and Ageing, School of Infection, Inflammation and Immunology, College of Medicine and Health.
Supervisor: Professor Adam Croft, Department of Inflammation and Ageing.
Background
Provide technical expertise to the Translational Immunology Team in the Rheumatology Research group. Work with human disease tissue samples, patient‑derived organoid systems and animal models to study chronic inflammation, focusing on fibroblasts and tissue‑resident macrophages.
Experience with in‑vivo immunology and mice handling is essential. The role heavily involves flow cytometry and histology.
Role Summary
Provide technical expertise, support and guidance on research. Supervise technical staff where required; act as a role model and coach. Operate outside normal hours as needed. Provide flexible support across departments.
Main Duties
- Assist in the design, execution and management of in‑vivo experiments (mouse models of inflammatory disease).
- Maintain in‑vivo colonies and manage administrative tasks via ARMIS (BMSU).
- Lead tissue digestion and sample preparation pipelines for single‑cell analysis.
- Advise on techniques such as flow cytometry, histology/microscopy, tissue culture and genotyping.
- Prepare human biological samples (serum, plasma, PBMCs) and other preparations.
- Ensure compliance with GCP, HTA, COSHH and Good Laboratory Practice.
- Track sample movements in the group LIM system.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot and provide solutions for experimental issues.
- Maintain accurate records of procedures and results.
- Ensure compliance with legislation and operating procedures for substances and mixtures.
- Support internal and external audit procedures and regulatory inspections.
Health and Safety Duties
- Support health and safety within the lab, maintain required assessments.
- Provide training on safe equipment operation.
- Perform regular maintenance checks and document records.
- Report breaches to management.
- Adhere to waste disposal policies.
- May be required to undertake First Aider training.
General Administration and Organisation
- Maintain accurate records and stocks of consumables.
- Generate purchase orders via University systems.
- Ensure facilities remain clean, functional and safe.
- Maintain PAT testing, calibration and equipment inventories.
- Promote carbon reduction and energy saving measures.
- Maintain technical support website and lab databases.
Other Duties
- Assist in training and mentoring junior staff.
- Support equality and diversity values; avoid discriminatory bias.
- Undertake additional duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
- Home Office Personal Licence (PIL A/B) OR substantial mouse in‑vivo experience.
- Experience with flow cytometry and histology/microscopy.
- Processing of human biological samples and cell culture.
- Relevant degree or equivalent professional qualification.
- Extensive laboratory experience and familiarity with a wide range of equipment.
- Positive service attitude and courtesy.
- Ability to organise workload and work flexibly.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision as part of a team.
- Knowledge of current legislation, H&S policies and equality/diversity requirements.
- Proficiency with commonly used software packages.
