Project Manager (Alkaline team) – School of Physics and Astronomy – 106435 – Grade 7

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK. Full time, fixed term contract up to August 2026. Closing date: 30 October 2025. Salary: £36,636–£46,049 with potential progression to £48,822. Grade: 7.

Joining this role means contributing to the management of projects within the School of Physics and Astronomy. The position is full-time and may be extended beyond the initial fixed-term period dependent on performance and funding.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the delivery of one or more projects or for contributing to larger University projects, through the provision of significant and high-level project management support. This may include the following:
  • Developing project plans, identifying key performance indicators and milestones.
  • Reviewing and auditing progress to improve effectiveness, efficiency and delivery.
  • Reporting on progress, including developing reporting mechanisms, writing reports (eg on project budgetary management), and presenting to Project Boards or other key stakeholders.
  • Providing executive support to Project Boards, work streams and working groups; setting agendas, collating and distributing papers and minutes, and ensuring follow-up actions.
  • Assessing and escalating issues and risks as appropriate, including monitoring risk registers.
  • Stakeholder management, ensuring effective liaison with project partners, funders and Project Boards as appropriate.
  • Managing project resources, including budgets, and ensuring project documentation is maintained.
  • Coordinate the organisation of conferences, meetings, workshops and dissemination events as required.
  • Develop and deliver a communication strategy for the project(s), which may include newsletters, stakeholder briefings and/or websites or social media.
  • Ensure priorities are balanced and deliver agreed deliverables against timelines.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of project management methodologies.
  • Source, analyse and develop insights from data to inform evaluation and review of projects.
  • Promote equality and values of diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
  • Support the University’s sustainability agenda through resource-efficient working.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade.
  • Qualifications and Skills

    • Degree level or equivalent plus practical managerial experience or significant relevant experience demonstrated through progressively more demanding roles.
    • Proven track record of successful project management, preferably using one or more project management tools such as Prince2.
    • Strong literacy and numeracy with ability to write clearly and analyse information and data.
    • Excellent people-management and budgetary management skills.
    • Highly proficient IT skills, including MS Office and website editing software; ability to quickly learn new IT tools as required.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, relationship-building and influencing skills with the ability to work with a range of stakeholders.
    • Excellent organisational and multi-tasking skills with a methodical approach and ability to prioritise to meet deadlines.
    • Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics and how to ensure fair treatment in day-to-day activities.
