Research Fellow (Postdoctoral) - School of Biosciences in Hurley

Role Overview

The Post‑doctoral Research Fellow will work in the integrative structural biology group of Prof. Teresa Carlomagno at the University of Birmingham. The research focuses on the functional mechanisms of proteins, including intrinsically disordered proteins, nucleic acids and their complexes, using high‑field NMR spectroscopy, X‑ray crystallography, electron microscopy, mass spectrometry and small‑angle scattering. The Fellow will investigate RNA metabolism, regulation of gene expression, DNA repair and signalling.

Responsibilities

• Develop research objectives and proposals within the laboratory’s strategic areas.
• Acquire, analyze and interpret structural, biochemical and biophysical data.
• Apply knowledge to develop new intellectual understanding.
• Disseminate findings through publications, seminars, posters and other academic venues.
• Supervise and mentor students, including PhD candidates, when appropriate.
• Contribute to writing research funding bids and to the planning and organisation of research programmes.
• Support departmental and institute research‑related activities, including enterprise and public engagement initiatives.
• Collect research data via experimentation, literature reviews, and other scientific methods.
• Troubleshoot problems that may impede research progress and respect deadlines.
• Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and foster an inclusive working culture.

Qualifications and Experience

• PhD (or near completion) in biophysics, biochemistry, chemical biology, structural biology or a related discipline.
• Proficiency in biomolecular NMR spectroscopy or single‑particle electron microscopy in data acquisition and analysis.
• Practical experience in a biochemical laboratory and handling nucleic acids.
• High analytical capability and ability to communicate complex information clearly.
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques and the ability to develop new methods.
• Ability to assess resource requirements, use resources effectively and contribute to management/administration processes.
• Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 and commitment to inclusive practices.
