Food and Beverage Team Leader – Campus Services
Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK
Full time starting salary is normally in the range £25,618 to £27,126. Grade: Full Time (Annualised hours). Permanent. Closing date: 26/10/2025.
Overview
You will be responsible for supervising a team in providing excellent customer service in food and beverage outlets. You will ensure the provision of high-quality food and beverage service, cash handling, supervising staff, cleaning and stock control within a team, along with any other duties required to ensure the smooth running of the catering service for a diverse customer base. You may be required to work elsewhere in the department or wider University to flexibly use resources.
Main duties
- Customer Service: Greet and serve customers professionally, answer queries, and handle situations to deliver the highest level of service. Supervise the team to deliver proactive customer service, manage shift planning and staff rotas, and raise concerns to the line manager. Build rapport with customers and encourage feedback. Maintain high standards of presentation by the team at all times.
- Business Requirements: Ensure food and beverages are produced to quality, recipe and presentation standards and served consistently. Follow all operating specifications including food safety. Place accurate orders for food and commodities from stores, production areas, and suppliers as directed. Complete monthly stock takes accurately and timely. Maintain stock rotation, adequate stock levels, and use-by date controls. Report equipment or vehicle failures and hazards promptly. Adhere to portion controls and record wastage. Ensure HACCP hygiene and allergen records are carried out and stored correctly. Comply with Health/Safety Codes of Practice and COSHH. Assist with transporting commodities and equipment following hygiene protocols. Operate EPOS terminals accurately, including cash handling and end-of-day procedures. If serving alcohol, ensure compliance with licensing laws.
- Team Work: Motivate the team to upsell and improve service standards. Promote outlets and events, participate in training, maintain professional relationships with staff and the Catering Management Team. Conduct job chats and annual performance reviews, identify training needs, provide coaching, and support staff. Attend briefs, training and departmental meetings. Engage in annual personal development reviews. Undertake other duties as requested. Treat everyone with dignity and respect, support equality and diversity. Monitor absence and maintain records.
- Operational Requirements: Contracts are annualised and based on 35 hours per week (or pro rata), including weekends, bank holidays and rota-based evenings. Be prepared to work across all UoB campuses as required.
- Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience: Demonstrate literacy (Maths and English GCSE or equivalent, or relevant work experience). Experience in a food and beverage environment, including ordering and scheduling. A current Food Safety Level 3, Personal Licence, and NVQ Food Preparation/Service are desirable but full training will be provided. Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Act, HACCP, COSHH, and manual handling. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and in a team. Smart appearance (uniform provided). Full clean driving licence. Flexible work patterns. Ability to understand diversity considerations (e.g., dietary requirements, dress code).
- Dimensions and Planning: Supervise team members, support their development, and assist in achieving budget targets. Ensure the service is ready for opening, plan and schedule workload, and maintain stock levels to meet demand.
- Problem Solving and Internal/External Relationships: Manage customer complaints, stock storage and rotation, and maintain accurate records. Refer more complex issues to managers. Work with University staff, students, the public, suppliers and the Catering Management Team.
