Full time starting salary is normally in the range £29,647 to £31,460, with potential progression once in post to £35,388

Overview

The post-holder will be responsible for leading a team and providing excellent customer service in one of Campus Services outlets, planning and delivering against key performance indicators within the budget, and proactively supporting the Food and Beverage senior management team.

Main Duties

  • Ensure that areas within your area of responsibility are set up and operated adhering to Standard Operating Procedures or Brand Guidelines. Ensure that all operational and standards audits are passed.

Financial

  • Create and deliver a sales plan to achieve the sales target for the unit.
  • Control all associated costs; Staff Costs, Casuals, Gross Profit %, Maintenance & Repairs, Consumables, and other controllable costs.
  • Manage the stock system to deliver great product availability while minimising waste; support monthly stocktakes and actions to improve Gross Profit.
  • Deliver all event activity on time and within budget constraints.
  • Monitor cash handling and till/system functions; investigate non-compliance and implement robust controls to prevent recurrence.

Safe ways of working

  • Operate your area safely and efficiently; take remedial action for any procedural breaches and implement prevention plans.
  • Ensure agreed standards of food and beverage service are delivered, and that all preparation meets legal requirements and quality standards.
  • Comply with licensing law when serving alcohol and ensure team compliance.
  • Audit units regularly; address issues promptly, implement corrective actions, and provide training to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain and operate facilities; escalate unresolved issues to your Manager.
  • Adhere to all work rules and codes of practice including Health & Safety, COSHH, HACCP, hygiene, and allergen recording systems.
  • Complete administration and paperwork professionally and timely.

Leadership

  • Adhere to University HR policies and employment law; set goals and develop staff capability.
  • Model customer-first service; train and support staff to deliver consistent service.
  • Anticipate customer and unit needs; communicate with the line manager to ensure an optimal environment during shifts.
  • Collect and act on customer feedback; provide coaching and development for the team.
  • Monitor key business indicators and provide coaching to achieve goals; develop rolling training plans and maintain training records.
  • Conduct regular job chats and performance/development reviews; ensure timely, fair, and consistent processes.
  • Implement University HR policies on absence and performance management in consultation with HR Advisory as needed.
  • Support equality and values diversity; Deputise for the Manager when required.

Operational requirements

  • Hours: 35-hour week with 7/365 rota on campus; includes weekend and evening work as required.
  • Participate in the BOPS duty management rota (7/365).
  • Undertake works across all University of Birmingham campuses as requested to support the Division and wider University activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Educated to NVQ Level 3 in a relevant subject or equivalent experience in a commercial food service setting.
  • Literacy and numeracy skills (GCSE Maths or equivalent at Grade C/4 or higher).
  • Considerable supervisory/management experience in a commercial food service and preparation environment.
  • Current Food Safety Level 4 certificate.
  • Full, clean driving license desirable for potential driving of University vehicles.
  • Current Personal Licence for sale of alcohol, or willingness to obtain with training and support.
  • Ability to contribute to developing sales and service plans to grow the business.
  • In-depth knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Act, HACCP, COSHH, waste disposal, and related regulatory guidance; knowledge of fire procedures and ability to lead compliance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Clear, concise verbal and written communication; strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with managers, staff, and customers.
  • Excellent organisational skills; ability to lead a team and work within a management team to deadlines.
  • Motivated, team player able to engage with multiple student and staff groups; able to work under pressure and to timelines.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and ability to address related issues in line with policies.
  • Ability to present a professional appearance in uniform.
