You will be responsible for providing excellent customer service in any one of those retail areas/outlets. This post will involve basic food preparation, the provision of a high quality retail service, cash handling, cleaning and stock control, together with any other duties required to ensure the smooth running of the business and operations service we offer to our diverse range of customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet and serve customers in a professional, responsive, courteous, friendly manner, including answering queries and dealing with situations that arise.
- Build rapport with customers and encourage customer feedback.
- Maintain a professional working relationship with all colleagues.
- Undertake basic retail/food and drink preparation, maintaining quality standards.
- Ensure correct standard of stock rotation, maintain adequate stock levels, adjust orders as required, and use retail products before the best before date; ensure merchandising standards are met.
- Report equipment failures and hazards to the Supervisor/Manager/Supplier in a timely manner.
- Adhere to all merchandising standards and to the Operations Manuals as directed by the Supervisor/Manager.
- Control all retail wastage and record as required.
- Implement HACCP hygiene and allergen recording systems and correctly execute retail receipt procedures.
- Conform to and adhere to Health and Safety Codes of Practice and COSHH regulations at all times.
- Assist with the transportation of stock and equipment between locations, following hygiene and health and safety protocols.
- Operate electronic point of sale (EPOS) terminals, handle cash effectively, and conduct opening and end‑of‑day procedures, cashing up, and ensuring the security of all monies.
- Perform cleaning tasks to a high standard at all times, following standard operating procedures, and regularly remove rubbish to maintain a clean environment.
- Ensure thorough cleaning and sanitisation of all equipment, fixtures, walls, fridges, tables, and other work areas before the end of each shift.
- Place orders for food and stock or undertake stock takes as directed by the manager.
- Ensure compliance with relevant licensing laws when serving restricted items.
- Actively seek opportunities to increase sales by upselling products and making recommendations as directed.
- Participate in any training and development activities required.
- Support colleagues and maintain a supportive workplace culture.
- Attend all team briefs, training, and departmental meetings as required.
- Participate in an annual personal development review with the line manager/supervisor.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties or requests, including driving university vehicles when appropriate and a clean driving licence is held.
- Treat everyone with dignity and respect, supporting equality and valuing diversity.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience and knowledge of working in a busy customer‑facing role, preferably in a retail environment.
- Commitment to providing a quality service.
- Positive communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work on own initiative or as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain a high standard of personal appearance; a portion of a uniform will be provided.
- Flexible approach to working hours and days; availability for weekdays, weekends, bank holidays, and evenings may be required.
- Understanding of diversity considerations and their impact on customer preferences and dress code.
- Ability to learn and understand how diversity considerations affect the working area.
- Students are expected to work up to their graduation and may be required to work over the summer break and during term time up to 20 hours per week (subject to course type, availability, and visa requirements).
- Preferred but not essential: at least a year left in the course, graduating in July 2027 or later.
