Job Context

The ELSA study is recruiting 70,000 children aged between 2-17 years of age; this role involves making up testing kits for dispatch to participants’ homes and to testing clinics.

Job Summary

The successful applicant will work alongside the ELSA study team to assemble sample testing kits, including packing kit components, adding address and person ID labels, ensuring quality assurance, and organizing stock for the office. The role may also involve sending stock requests to clinics.

Main Duties

  • Make up home sample testing kits and testing kits for dispatch to clinics.
  • Ensure the correct components are added to testing kits.
  • Attach address and person ID labels to kits.
  • Perform routine quality checks.
  • Organise and send out stock requests to clinics.
  • Liaise with the study team regarding ordering new supplies and tracking stock.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Availability between Monday to Friday, 8am‑4pm.
  • Excellent time keeping.
  • Experience with repetitive work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work within a team and report issues to manager.
  • Work to GDPR requirements; understanding of good practice with handling personal data and confidentiality.

Additional Information

The maximum working hours will be subject to Casual Working Hour Restrictions. Usual working hours are between 8am and 4pm, Monday‑Friday. This position is part‑time during term time and can be full‑time or part‑time outside of term time, based on preference. All students are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week during term time for a maximum of 13 consecutive weeks; if the role exceeds 20 hours per week or falls outside the usual academic term timetable, a formal agreement with the supervisor is required. International students must apply for the appropriate authorised absence. The role is only available to current University of Birmingham students. Right to work checks will be required prior to commencing work.
