School of Psychology. Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK. Salary: up to £52,013. Grade: Clinical. Full‑time, fixed‑term contract, up to 2 years. Closing date: 7 July 2026. UK travel may be required.
Background
The position is funded by the Wellcome Trust, part of the ENERGISE‑BD phase III RCT comparing a ketogenic diet with the NHS Eat‑Well plan in people with bipolar disorder depression. It is co‑led by the University of Birmingham and the University of Edinburgh.
Role Summary
Clinical Research Fellow to support delivery of the trial at the Midlands site, working with ENERGISE‑BD teams in Birmingham and Edinburgh. The post involves recruitment, assessment and follow‑up of research participants and data collection. It offers opportunities for academic training and progression towards ACF/ACL posts or PhD funding.
Responsibilities
- Work within specified research grant and projects and contribute to writing bids.
- Operate within area of specialism; analyse and interpret research findings.
- Contribute to generating funding and to licensing or spin‑out deals with commercial success.
- Develop research objectives and proposals, with mentor support if required.
- Contribute to writing bids for research funding.
- Analyse and interpret data; apply knowledge to develop new intellectual understanding.
- Disseminate research findings for publication, seminars, posters.
- Supervise students on research‑related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate.
- Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods.
- Undertake management/administration arising from research.
- Contribute to department/school research‑related activities and administration.
- Contribute to enterprise, business development and public engagement activities.
- Collect research data through experimentation, literature reviews, interviews.
- Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications.
- Provide guidance to support staff and students assisting with research.
- Manage problems affecting research objectives and deadlines.
- Promote equality and diversity, fostering an inclusive working culture.
- Maintain high standard of personalised care for patients, following GMC guidance.
- Maintain GCP training.
- No out‑of‑hours on‑call commitment; post offers full‑time or part‑time (to be agreed).
- Work in accordance with UK policy, GCP, Medicines for Human Use Regulations, GDPR, ethics and local procedures.
- Lead on raising awareness of the study among clinicians and patients to facilitate recruitment.
- Conduct baseline and follow‑up assessments, ensure participants meet inclusion/exclusion criteria and obtain consent.
- Maintain accurate records in a shared database.
- Contribute to knowledge exchange and dissemination.
- Provide guidance and supervision for postgraduate student projects.
Qualifications and Experience
- MBBS/MBCHB or equivalent.
- MRCPsych or substantial clinical training towards membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Full General Medical Council Registration with a Licence to Practice.
- High analytical capability working with multi‑disciplinary datasets.
- Experience with biological samples (blood, saliva).
- Strong communication skills, ability to convey complex information clearly.
- Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods, and ability to develop new ones.
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
- Understanding of management/administration processes.
- Knowledge of GCP.
- Requirement for DBS, Occupational Health Check and knowledge of the Data Protection Act.
- Knowledge of Equality Act 2010 and ability to ensure equal treatment of protected characteristics.

All successful applicants will need satisfactory Occupational Health and DBS clearance prior to appointment.
