Position Details: Student Discipline and Professionalism Case Manager – College of Medicine and Health, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK. Full‑time (Part Time, 0.5 FTE) and Fixed Term contract up to August 2027. Closing date 14 June 2026. Salary range £36,636‑£46,049, with potential progression to £48,822.

Background: Students in professional health care programmes must demonstrate professional standards of health and conduct to be deemed fit to practise. The College is responsible for ensuring only students who are fit to practise graduate, managing complex academic appeals and Fitness to Practise referral cases. Legal, reputational and regulatory implications necessitate careful handling of these cases.

Role Summary: The Student Discipline and Professionalism Case Manager will lead a team and enhance the student experience by providing guidance and advice, supporting the successful delivery of academic programmes, and managing Fitness to Practice cases.

Main Duties:

  • Investigations – Facilitate thorough investigations, prepare detailed reports in collaboration with the Investigating Officer, and work with the University’s Legal Services on complex cases. Compile, check, and index case files, ensuring completeness of allegations, evidence and student responses.
  • Hearings and Appeals – Provide professional support and advice for Fitness to Practice hearings; guide decisions of case presenters, senior academics and committees. Manage interview processes, prepare statements, brief witnesses, ensure follow‑through of outcomes, oversee appeal progress, and maintain accurate records for reporting.
  • Committee Support – Act as secretary to College and University Misconduct and Fitness to Practise Committees, write accurate minutes, and produce necessary follow‑up letters.
  • Quality Assurance and Training – Devise a quality assurance framework meeting University and PSRB standards, develop training materials, run training sessions for academic and clinical colleagues, review procedures, and drive improvement.
  • General Responsibilities – Promote equality and diversity, act as a role model, and foster an inclusive culture.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree level education (or equivalent qualifications) plus significant practical experience.
  • Ability to review and implement regulatory frameworks, university procedures and policy in complex situations.
  • Knowledge of legislation impacting the role – GDPR, Equality Act, Human Rights Act.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and relationship‑building skills, with confidence in advising stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong written communication – drafting succinct, sensitive and accurate guidance, reports and correspondence.
  • Negotiation and influence skills; experience in a compliance‑based organisation.
  • Analytical approach to problem solving.
  • Maintaining confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010 and actively ensuring equal and fair treatment.
