Position Details: Associate Clinical Professor – Department of Dentistry, School of Health Sciences, College of Medicine and Health. Location and Salary: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK. Full‑time. Salary range: £71,694 to £113,761. Grade: Clinical. Permanent. Closing date: 5th July 2026.

Role Summary: As an Associate Clinical Professor, the candidate will contribute at a senior level on a sustained basis to teaching leadership, administration, academic citizenship and clinical service. Responsibilities include the development of major teaching programmes, enhancement of student experience, and leadership in teaching and learning. The role also requires departmental/School leadership, engagement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and public engagement, and maintenance of an honorary clinical contract with the Birmingham Community Health Care Foundation Trust.

Main Duties:

  • Education: Contribute to the pedagogical knowledge base through teaching resources, practice‑based research and innovative approaches. Lead the management and development of teaching and learning approaches, supporting colleagues in their use. Design curriculum at module and programme level ensuring contemporary, inclusive and academically challenging content. Engage students in curriculum design. Publish and present on education policy, methods and practices. Participate in external quality assurance activities and support teaching at other institutions. Play a role in recruitment and admission of students. Co‑supervise doctoral students to completion. Lead development of teaching, learning and assessment policies and strategies. Act as an education mentor to colleagues. Lead new and appropriate approaches to learning and teaching. Foster high‑value impact in knowledge transfer and enterprise that benefits the College and the University. Teach and examine courses at various levels, supervise, mark and examine.
  • Management and Administration: Contribute to the development and running of the Department or School, including teaching assessment. Lead international engagement at School or College level. Manage staff and resources for major teaching activities. Contribute to the learning and teaching strategy of the Department and University. Develop and deliver knowledge transfer, enterprise and public engagement activities with high‑value impact. Implement a culture promoting Equality and valuing diversity and inclusion. Lead and assist committees and task groups beyond School/Department. Lead external committees associated with public or professional bodies. Project‑manage teams to devise and implement new or revised processes. Contribute to widening participation and public understanding of the discipline. Participate in administrative activities such as appeals panels.
  • Citizenship: Identify wellbeing issues and develop solutions. Take ownership of School challenges and collaborate on solutions. Mentor and coach early‑career colleagues.
  • Clinical Service: Provide clinical service as part of an honorary contract, guided by the service lead. Develop clinical skills in paediatric dentistry. Deliver personal treatment sessions on an outpatient basis. Teach programmes for junior dentists and nurses. Collaborate with trust colleagues to strengthen dental service provision.

Person Specification: Must be a dentist who has completed specialist training and is fully registered with the GDC, participating in clinical appraisal and revalidation. Demonstrated competence in learning and teaching, and in management and administration. Teaching experience within the subject specialism. Normally holds a higher degree relevant to the discipline (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.

Management and Administration Requirements: Successful performance in significant administrative or managerial role (e.g. exams officer). High‑quality innovative contributions to management and administration. Active contribution to the corporate life of the School, College and University. Promotion of equality and diversity to stakeholders. Use of data to identify equality and diversity issues. Experience developing interventions to address equality and diversity issues.
