Assistant Professor to be based in the School of Mathematics, Birmingham, UK (School of Mathematics, University of Birmingham). The position starts on a permanent, full‑time basis (Grade 8) with a salary range of £47,389 – £56,535, progressing to up to £63,606 after successful completion of a 5‑year Academic Development Programme which leads to promotion to Associate Professor. Two positions are available and the closing date is 8 June 2026.

Academic Development Programme
New Assistant Professors undertake a 5‑year development programme, concluding with expected promotion to Associate Professor. The programme offers diverse development opportunities to support teaching, research and contributions to the School’s modern education portfolio.
Role Summary
The role involves teaching, research, and service across the School’s focus areas of Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science. Successful applicants will contribute to three new Master’s programmes at J‑BJI (MSc Statistical Data Science; MSc Bioinformatics; MSc Healthcare Data Science) and will deliver the majority of their teaching during month‑long trips to Guangzhou (typically two trips per academic year).
Full Scope of Duties
Education- Teach and examine courses at various levels, including undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD.
- Plan and review teaching approaches; encourage colleagues to adopt inclusive practices.
- Design contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content.
- Collaborate with colleagues to deliver teaching, learning and assessment.
- Use digital resources and environments effectively.
- Develop programme proposals and contribute to broader teaching programme design.
- Supervise, mark and examine student work.
- Advise and develop peers on teaching methods and tasks.
- Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities that enhance the student experience and employability.
- Supervise projects, dissertations and practical work.
- Plan, publish high‑quality research and secure funding.
- Project manage research activities and supervise other research staff.

- PhD (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Statistics or related field.
