Summary
The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences (SportExR) at the University of Birmingham, UK, is a world-leading department which combines innovative and translational research with evidence-based professional practice to promote lifelong engagement in physical activity, optimising health, wellbeing and performance for everyone. We are seeking to appoint a full-time Assistant Professor in Exercise and Brain Health, who will contribute to research, teaching, and administration, demonstrating excellent academic citizenship.
Applicants with expertise at the interface of brain health and physical health are encouraged, including those working on clinical exercise physiology, exercise or lifestyle interventions for disease prevention or brain health maintenance, rehabilitation of clinical groups, or applied health research in clinical settings with neurological focus.
This position links to our new Centre for Movement and Wellbeing (MoveWell), fostering interdisciplinary research and community engagement. The role involves collaborative work with departments like Psychology, CHBH, and IMH, requiring strong theoretical knowledge and practical experience with clinical cohorts.
Teaching responsibilities include curriculum development, delivery, supervision, and assessment, focusing on practice-based learning and exercise prescription for clinical populations. The role also involves initiating and disseminating research, securing funding, and leading high-quality interdisciplinary projects.
Management duties include contributing to School administration, supporting equality and diversity initiatives, and engaging in community and public outreach activities. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to an inclusive environment, supporting colleagues and students, and actively participating in university life.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- A higher degree (usually PhD) relevant to Exercise Sciences, Clinical Exercise Physiology, and/or neurological conditions
- Registration with the Academy of Healthcare Sciences (AHCS)
Teaching
- Experience in designing, delivering, and assessing courses, particularly in applied clinical settings
Research
- Experience in exercise interventions for clinical populations, especially related to brain health and neurological conditions
Management/Administration
- Strong organizational skills and experience in academic administration
Personal Attributes
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to prioritize, and a flexible, patient-centered approach
