Position Details
Full‑time, Permanent, Grade 8. Salary band £47,389 – £56,535, with potential progression to £63,606.

Academic Development Programme
New Assistant Professors will undertake a five‑year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor.
Role Summary
The School of Mathematics is committed to expanding its research and education programmes in Applied Mathematics. The Assistant Professor will contribute to these strategic goals by conducting high‑quality research and developing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education in Applied Mathematics. The role also involves management, leadership, enterprise activities and, where appropriate, service commitments.
Education Responsibilities
- Teach and examine courses at a range of levels, using a variety of teaching methods.
- Plan and review teaching approaches and encourage colleagues to do the same.
- Design contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content.
- Collaborate with colleagues to deliver teaching, learning and assessment.
- Use digital resources and environments effectively to support learning and assessment.
- Develop programme proposals and contribute to the design of teaching programmes.
- Supervise, mark and examine where appropriate.
- Advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
- Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities to enhance student employability and benefit the College and University.
- Devises and supervises projects, student dissertations and practical work.
Research Responsibilities
- Plan and publish high‑quality research, including pursuing and winning financial support.
- Project‑manage research activities and, where appropriate, supervise other research staff.
- Publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
- Effectively supervise and mentor PhD students or early‑career researchers.
- Provide expert advice to staff and students within the discipline.
- Participate in research‑related enabling activities such as cross‑disciplinary networking.
- Apply knowledge to develop new intellectual understanding.
- Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement and similar activity that benefits the College and University, documenting impact.
Management and Administration Responsibilities
- Contribute to the administration and management of research and/or teaching across the Department/School.
- Lead and manage a team to devise and implement new or revised processes such as new programmes or recruitment drives.
- Advise on personal development of colleagues and students.
- Make a major contribution to administrative activities within the University, e.g. appeals panels and working groups.
- Manage enterprise, business development and public engagement activities.
- Develop and contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement and widening participation, school outreach.
- Actively manage equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and challenge unacceptable behaviour.
Citizenship Responsibilities
- Participate in a variety of activities supporting University life, e.g. graduation and departmental committees.
- Support colleagues by sharing resources and providing advice.
- Volunteer for one‑off duties such as supporting School, Institute and Departmental projects.
- Positively engage in School strategic initiatives.
- Proactively support and involve in activities that contribute to a positive and inclusive community spirit across the School, College and University.
Person Specification
- Normally a higher degree relevant to the research or teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
- Extensive research and teaching experience and scholarship within the subject specialism.
- Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning and research.
- Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.
Teaching Competencies
- Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
- Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching, and advising colleagues.
- Experience and success in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activities that enhance the student experience or employability.
