Academic Development Programme - new Assistant Professors will undertake a 5-year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor. The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.

Our Clinical and Forensic Psychology postgraduate programmes are a major strength, attracting outstanding trainees supported by deep partnerships with external agencies.

We are seeking to appoint a creative, thoughtful, and collaborative Clinical Psychologist (Assistant Professor) to join the Centre for Applied Psychology (CAP). This is an excellent opportunity for a clinician‑educator who is passionate about training the next generation of psychologists, and who wants to develop their academic and clinical career within a supportive, inclusive, and intellectually vibrant environment.

You will contribute primarily to the Clinical Psychology Doctorate (ClinPsyD) in an education focused Clinical Tutor (placement related) role. Working closely with colleagues, trainees, and placement partners, you will play a central role in delivering high quality clinical training. You may also contribute to Master’s and Undergraduate programmes.

Role Summary

You will contribute to a range of education-related activities. In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs. You will contribute to the full range of placement-related, teaching and administration duties on the Clinical Psychology Doctorate as well as, where appropriate, other courses delivered by the School of Psychology.

The focus of the Clinical Tutor, placement-related component of the role will predominantly include:

  • liaison with external stakeholders (e.g., Trusts, non-NHS services, supervisors, managers) to assess and appraise the suitability of placements for trainees,
  • contributions to placement organisation and planning with local partners on an ongoing basis,
  • development, delivery and evaluation of supervisor training,
  • appraising, reviewing and overseeing trainees’ clinical competences development as benchmarked against relevant professional and regulatory bodies, and
  • supporting the clinical placement activity of trainees, their more general placement experiences over the course of training, and the quality of placement provision.

A demonstrable appetite and evidence of aptitude for acting as a Clinical Tutor for placement-related work, clinical supervisor liaison, and overseeing trainee competency development, is required.

Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to:

  • the development, management, and leadership of module / sub-courses (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment at postgraduate level;
  • supervisor training / workshops;
  • enhancement of the student experience or employability;
  • contributing to the marking of academic work of trainees; and
  • some opportunities to support trainee research projects.

The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including:

  • providing expert advice to staff and students, and
  • developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks, approaches, and methods.

Teaching focused role-holders should advance the practice of teaching within the School, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic and pastoral support. You will deliver excellent teaching and training that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research and current clinical practice.

Management and administration are likely to involve contributions within the Centre for Applied Psychology/School by, for example, taking on a teaching-related administrative role (e.g., Year Tutor, organisation for professional mentors) and can also include leadership and management activity within the School. Such activity may also include making an important contribution to management/leadership (e.g., working groups) within the University, to include, for example, developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, school’s outreach, or similar activities that are of manifest benefit to the Department/School level or further within the University.

Main Duties

Education

You will contribute across the range of teaching and learning activities:

  • contribute to leading curriculum development and/or renewal;
  • develop and manage approaches to teaching and learning that are best practice in the subject area or institution;
  • advise others on aspects of learning, teaching and assessment;
  • deliver (where appropriate to the discipline) specific professional programmes;
  • advance the practice of teaching in their modules and within the school, and play an important role in student academic support;
  • inform your teaching practice by discipline-based research;
  • frequently update your subject expertise, and undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes;
  • you may play an important role in the recruitment and admission of students; and
  • co-supervise doctoral students to completion.

Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students, including (as appropriate):

  • teaching and examining courses at a range of levels;
  • planning and reviewing your own teaching approaches and encouraging others to do the same;
  • designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content;
  • working collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment;
  • using digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment;
  • developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely;
  • where appropriate, undertaking and developing the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining;
  • developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods;
  • developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement activities or similar on own specialism that enhances the student experience or employability and which benefits the College and University;
  • devising and supervising projects, student dissertations and practical work.

Management/Administration

To contribute to Departmental /School administration. This may include:

  • contributing to the administration/management of teaching and placements across the Department/School;
  • where appropriate, leading and managing a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive);
  • advising on personal development of colleagues and students;
  • making a contribution to administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups);
  • managing enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities;
  • developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach;
  • promoting equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.

  • Teaching contributions will include module leadership and teaching delivery, marking, supervisor training, and initiatives that enhance trainee experience and employability.
  • Opportunities to support trainee research projects are available, and while this role is education focused, engagement in research is encouraged.

Person Specification

You will hold a Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and be registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist. We welcome applications from both recently qualified and experienced Clinical Psychologists. A demonstrable enthusiasm for clinical tutoring and placement related work. Evidence of excellence, or strong potential, in postgraduate teaching. Experience of clinical practice. Leadership and collegiality appropriate to career stage. Willingness to contribute to programme development, leadership, and the wider academic life of the School. Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning for self and others. High-level written communication skills. High-level oral communication skills in both individual and group situations. Skills and experience in clinical supervision of trainee clinical psychologists and / or research supervision or activity.

Teaching

Teaching experience at higher education level (or in professional practice) and scholarship within subject specialism. Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes / workshops. Experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate, inclusive, approaches to learning and teaching. Skills in managing, motivating, supervising, and mentoring others successfully at all levels, which should include, as appropriate to the professional background and training of the applicant, trainee clinical psychologists or other applied practitioners and/or students. Ability to support the integration of practice-based and academic learning. Skills in partnership working with internal and external stakeholders for job area.

Management Administration

Ability to contribute to Programme/School/Departmental management processes. Ability to assess and organise resources effectively. Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes. Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area (e.g., clinical practice, teaching, supervision, research). Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied. Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action. We value diversity of clinical expertise and theoretical orientation.
