Full time starting salary is normally in the range £43,455 to £73,506

Grade: Clinical Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to 4 years or CCT date, whichever is sooner

Role Summary

The post is a locally funded Clinical Lectureship at the University of Birmingham, in Gastroenterology/Hepatology. This post is available for 4 years or until reaching CCT (whichever is sooner). It is anticipated that the training programme will attract applicants who have already completed part of their higher specialist training in general medicine or gastroenterology.

The successful candidate will be appointed to the academic gastroenterology and hepatology training scheme. Clinical placement will be divided between the Gastroenterology and Liver Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. During the Gastroenterology placement there will be exposure to general medicine and acute medical takes. During the placement on the Liver Unit the candidate will participate in ward work, clinics as well as the on-call rota. Clinical contribution will be on a 0.5 WTE basis.

Academic placement will be in the Centre for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research and training will be overseen by Professor Shetty (Interim director of the Centre for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research and Academic Training Lead for Gastroenterology/Hepatology). The lecturer will be expected to develop research interests under their supervision in line with those of the Centre, with a view to applying for clinician scientist/intermediate fellowship funding.

The successful candidate would work closely within the recently renewed £30.7M NIHR Biomedical Research Centre hosted in Birmingham. The lecturer will be reviewed carefully from both the academic and clinical training perspective during their tenure. Clinical training will be assessed by the Gastroenterology Training Committee. The timing and logistics of this exchange will be coordinated by the training committee and the University.

The job plan for the Clinical Lecturer will be set up to protect 50% of the Lecturer's time for academic purposes, including academic training, as well as providing maximal clinical experience. The post holder will be expected to attend regular training days as appropriate.

Publications, presentations and grant applications

The post-holder will contribute to a range of ongoing translational and clinical research within the University and aim to publish in high-impact journals. They will also receive help in securing funding towards increasing independence and personal fellowships by the end of the ACL period.

Main Duties

The appointee is encouraged to develop a programme of discovery and/or translational research in line with current areas of interest in gastroenterology/hepatology. Special areas of research interest include immunology, stromal cell biology and regeneration of inflammatory bowel and liver disease and liver cancer. Another major area of interest is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with strength in pre-clinical and clinical phases and cellular therapy for autoimmune liver diseases.

The post-holders have responsibilities, which include the care of inpatients and outpatients with general medical and gastrointestinal or liver problems and which from time to time include teaching of introductory course students, junior clinical clerks, final year students and postgraduate students and co-ordination of undergraduate medical examinations at the training hospital.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

• A higher degree (MD/PhD) is highly desirable or about to complete a higher degree in a relevant subject area
• Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
• Ability to access and organise resources successfully
• Must hold a current NTN (ST3 or above)

Planning and Organising

Plan own day to day activity within the framework of the course programme. Timescales for most activities will range from 1-6 months in advance.

Problem Solving and decision making

Will use assigned resources within defined limits.

Internal and External relationships

Liaise with support staff on routine matters. Attend and contribute to relevant meetings. Regular contact and liaison with students.
