Health & Fitness Manager
The Department of Sports Development and Recreation seeks to utilise the power of sport to foster the best environment to enable individuals to thrive.
Under the University\’s sports brand – Team Bath – we manage and organises a range of activities and aspire to create a world leading multi-sport environment delivering to elite athletes, staff and students of the University and the local and regional community. Based in the inspiring £35m Sports Training Village, the Department offers a wide range of high-quality sports activities, programmes, events, services and facilities catering for all ages and abilities.
In addition, we are recognised by UK Sport as one of only eight Elite Training Centres, providing the training base for around 250 international level athletes. This is an opportunity to become part of a professional and progressive organisation at the leading edge of sport, health and fitness. The Times have also just awarded Bath as the Sport University of the Year for 2026.
About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to be the leader of a dynamic team of Health and Fitness Coaches, Personal Trainers and Group Exercise instructors operating in our recently refurbished gym. Our fitness space is one of the largest in the southwest and comprises of 3 gyms plus an indoor cycling and group exercise studio.
The mix of gym users includes students, athletes and members of the local community coupled with occasional training camps with professional sports teams. You would be tasked with nurturing an inspirational environment that enables users to get results whilst making it an enriching experience and welcome to all. As such, a passion for people and a desire to make every customer visit a special one is paramount.

About you
Our ideal candidate should have:
- significant experience of managing teams, and working in a sports and fitness environment
- a recognised Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer qualifications plus a range of recognised group exercise qualifications, such as indoor cycling
- significant demonstrable experience of financial and budgetary management
- extensive experience of customer care and experience in delivering training
- experience of a commercial environment and a proven track record of hitting service targets.

This is a full-time role, working 36.5 hours per week. The gym opening times are Monday to Friday 6.30 am pm, and 8.00 am pm at weekends.
You would be expected to undertake some shifts and so some morning, evening and weekend work would be required.
