Clerk of Works (Mechanical)

This role is part of the Projects team in the Department of Campus Infrastructure, responsible for maintenance and development of the University\’s buildings, including flagship developments such as the recently completed School of Management building.

In This Role You Will Be Responsible For

  • Monitoring, recording and reporting the progress of trade staff and contractors working on site as part of the University’s project and Engineering team.
  • Quality Control inspections ensuring high workmanship and quality is achieved.
  • Working with the contractors and their team to establish standards to which the works must be executed and reporting to the contractors and Engineering staff upon the quality and execution of the works.
  • Attending site progress meetings and providing a short written and verbal report under a list of headings to be agreed with the Project Manager/Contract Administrator.
  • Being familiar with site drawings and carrying out regular site visits.
  • Tracking, monitoring and logging snags/observations using the Contractor’s online reporting system of choice and ensuring that they are satisfactorily resolved and closed out.
  • Assisting in the monitoring of and reporting upon, the compliance of contractors working on site in relation to Health and Safety legislation and technical competence.

About You

  • Significant experience in managing the quality of large-scale capital expenditure building projects.
  • Extensive and varied experience in similar role(s).
  • An SVQ Level 3/HNC/Apprenticeship or equivalent in a construction-related subject.
  • Valid CSCS card and relevant qualification / professional membership (such as ICWCI).
  • Significant experience of space management at a senior and strategic level in a complex organisation.

Membership of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate and/or MCIOB, and experience of working within the higher education sector are desirable, along with a formal health and safety qualification, and familiarity with AutoCAD reading & plotting.

Full-time role, working 36.5 hours with participation in an on-call rota.
