We are excited to offer the opportunity for an efficient and organised candidate with a passion for Chemistry, to join the Faculty of Science Technical Team. Working predominantly in the Department of Life Sciences, your key focus will be providing teaching support in our bespoke undergraduate Chemistry teaching facilities.

The Teaching and Research Technician is a key full time, open-ended position within the Faculty of Science (FoS) teaching support team. Working closely with our Technical Leadership Team and academic teaching team, you will be responsible for the logistics and operation of the Chemistry teaching lab and associated spaces. The successful candidate will also provide cover for our Department of Chemistry UG laboratories and general support for other chemistry and FoS activities when required.

Ensuring undergraduate (UG) teaching sessions are prepared for in advance is key to first class service provision, as is ensuring the technical team, academic staff, and demonstrators are supported. The successful candidate will organise routine maintenance for the wide-range of analytical instruments used in the delivery of our teaching and research activities. They will also have the capacity to produce accurate user-information/procedures and be able to demonstrate the practical elements of instrumentation. Effective communication with multiple stakeholders is essential.

About You

Our model candidate will be a chemist, with experience in a technical, teaching and/or research environment. A proven interest in synthetic or analytical chemistry would be ideal, but we would consider other chemical disciplines for the right candidate.

  • Strong background in hazardous chemicals and biological materials.
  • Significant analytic/equipment experience.
  • Experience of planning and coordinating laboratory logistics to tight time-scales.
  • A strong understanding of laboratory health and safety and a passion for encouraging others to demonstrate good practice.
  • Effective time-management, efficiency and the capacity to multi-task are key to this role.
  • A flexible approach to work and the ability to trouble-shoot are also important.
  • Clear communication, diplomacy and enthusiasm are essential for anyone working as part of our busy team.
