Postdoctoral Research Associate in Atmospheric Dynamics for High-Altitude Autonomous Platforms (HAPS) at University of Bath's Centre for Climate, Adaptation and Environment Research (CAER).

This role involves working on the STRAT-NAV project, a £2m research initiative to predict, navigate and exploit atmospheric gravity waves to extend flight times of HAPS operating in the stratosphere.

Responsibilities

  • Year1: Use km‑scale stratospheric modelling to determine the maximum HAPS energy saving opportunity from gravity wave soaring and develop idealised routing algorithms.
  • Participate in a UK field campaign (winter 2026/27) using radiosonde balloon observations to validate waves and assess viability of gravity‑wave assisted routing.
  • Year2: Apply forecasting and routing capability to real HAPS test flights in collaboration with Radical Aero and other developers; support broader ARIA programme.
  • Year3: Refine forecasting and routing across multiple HAPS platforms and assess operational and commercial viability.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ph D (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong programming and computational skills – Python and/or MATLAB; familiarity with Bash/UNIX and handling large datasets.
  • Experience in high‑resolution atmospheric modelling, atmospheric dynamics, gravity waves, weather forecast or numerical weather prediction.
  • Experience with UAV, aircraft or vehicle routing algorithms; solid mathematical background for optimal routing, trajectory planning or dynamical systems.
  • Experience working with observational atmospheric datasets and enthusiasm for fieldwork and interdisciplinary research.
  • Additional Requirements
  • Self‑motivated, independent and innovative researcher comfortable working in a small team and collaborating with external partners.
  • Willingness to engage in intensive observational campaigns and field conditions.

The position is full‑time for 12months initially, with potential extensions to 24 or 36months depending on programme development.

Candidates who will soon complete their Ph D may receive a lower grade (Grade6) with reduced responsibilities and an adjusted title of Research Assistant if a suitable Grade7 candidate is unavailable.
