We wish to appoint a Data Protection Officer who will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the University’s information and ensuring we meet our legal and regulatory obligations.

About the role

You will work within the Information Governance team, and alongside colleagues across Information Security, Research Policy, Governance & Integrity, and Records Management to embed a strong culture of privacy and compliance. Acting as the University’s expert adviser on all matters related to data protection, you’ll guide senior staff, academic departments and professional services through complex risks, decisions and regulatory requirements. You will also lead the organisation’s response to data protection incidents and data breaches, acting as the key contact with the Information Commission and ensuring that our practices protect our community and uphold the University’s reputation. This is a role with significant visibility and influence, offering the opportunity to shape how the University manages information and responds to an evolving regulatory landscape.

About you

Your communication skills will enable you to engage, influence and advise colleagues at all levels, including senior executives, on sensitive or high-risk issues. You will be an experienced data protection professional with a track record of operating within a large or complex organisation; have a deep knowledge of Data Protection, GDPR and Data Use and Access Act legislation, with the confidence to interpret regulations and translate them into practical, proportionate actions for a range of stakeholders; thrive in a collaborative environment and be able to build strong working relationships across academic departments and professional services. The ideal candidate will also be an advocate for continuous improvement, committed to embedding a culture of privacy, transparency and compliance through training, awareness and policy development.
