We are seeking a proactive, people‑focused Assistant Security Operations Manager to support the leadership of a 24/7 security operation protecting students, staff, visitors, and the wider University estate. Reporting to the Security Operations Manager, you will help lead operational teams to deliver a responsive, high‑quality, and customer‑focused security service. This is a permanent, full‑time role (36.5 hours per week, 5 out of 7 days) with participation in an on‑call rota approximately one week in three, and an additional allowance is payable for on‑call duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise security teams and shift supervisors in delivering 24/7 operations
- Manage daily operations including staffing, resource deployment, and rota coordination
- Act as initial ground commander during emergencies and critical incidents, including escalation and liaison with emergency services
- Oversee incident management systems, ensuring accurate reporting, investigations, and evidence handling (CCTV and statements)
- Support safeguarding, welfare incidents, and major university events (e.g. Open Days, Graduations, protests)
- Ensure compliance with University policies and statutory requirements, and support staff performance, training, and development
- Act as deputy for the Security Operations Manager when required
Special Conditions
- Occasional out-of-hours work due to incidents or major events
- On‑call duties approximately one week in three, with additional payment
- Overtime for critical incidents or planned events compensated via TOIL
About You
- Have experience in security operations with supervisory responsibility
- Be confident managing incidents in high‑pressure environments
- Be calm, decisive, and able to take control in emergencies
- Have experience managing staff performance and operational issues
- Be strong in communication, report writing, and incident documentation
- Understand investigations, evidence handling, and basic legal principles
- Be organised with strong planning and resource management skills
- Build effective working relationships with staff and partners
- Hold (or be willing to obtain) an SIA Door Supervisor licence
- Hold a full UK driving licence and be willing to work on‑call
