Job Highlights:Ophthalmic Technicians at UAB Callahan Eye play a key role in providing high quality patient care. Primary responsibilities include assisting with eye exams, performing technical workups, documenting medical history, preparing and/or administering medications, and providing assistance during minor procedures. The ideal candidate for this role has a keen attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to patient safety and comfort. UAB Callahan Eye offers ongoing training and development opportunities for career growth through a structured path, which includes support to obtain relevant certifications. The shift for this full-time opportunity is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Job Description :
– Administer preliminary testing and measurements to assess patients\’ vision and eye health.
– Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
– Prepare patients for examinations by explaining procedures and ensuring their comfort.
– Assist ophthalmologists during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures. Sets up and cleans up procedures.
– Acts as scribe while the physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records or paper chart.
– Maintain and operate ophthalmic equipment, ensuring it is clean and functioning properly.
– Document patients’ medical history and examination results accurately in electronic health records.
– Provide patient education on eye health, treatment plans, and post-operative care.
– Schedule appointments and manage patient flow efficiently.
– Orders supplies.
– Assists in training of other ophthalmic technicians.
– Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Acts in accordance with all State and Federal regulations.
– Maintains positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
– Potential for travel between hospital and satellite clinics.
Qualifications
Required: – High school diploma or GED
– Must be able to travel between hospital and satellite clinics as needed
Preferred: – Associate\’s degree in ophthalmic technology or related field.
– Previous experience in an ophthalmic setting and familiarity with ophthalmic medical equipment.
– Proficiency in medical terminology, coding, and billing procedures.
– Basic math, including multiplication, and computer skills, typing a minimum of 25 words per minute.
– Experience in a medical office or health care setting.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations: Currently certified as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology preferred.
