In this role you will be at the forefront of delivering high‑quality evidence‑based care that meets the needs of the highest‑risk group of our patients in both community and acute settings.
The diabetes foot MDT at The James Cook University Hospital aims to provide the highest quality of diabetes foot care in the North East.
As an autonomous member of a multidisciplinary diabetes team you will manage an independent caseload of high‑risk patients, providing regular podiatry care and enabling rapid access (within one working day) for urgent referrals. You will work closely with diabetologists, vascular surgeons, orthopaedic and plastic surgeons, microbiologists, orthotists, cast technicians, and diabetes specialist nurses. You are also responsible for providing high‑risk specialist foot care and education to patients without diabetes in a community setting.
- Monitoring, diagnosis and investigations of high‑risk patients including wound care.
- Producing individual treatment plans and podiatry interventions; interpreting results and arranging onward referrals.
Your role includes part‑time work with the established Diabetes Foot MDT and extended teams, providing a flexible, fast‑access service for patients with urgent diabetes foot problems. The post holder will refer to medical and nursing staff, X‑ray, orthopaedic, orthotic and vascular teams as indicated. Highly developed clinical and excellent communication skills, including leadership attributes, are required for this post.
Additional responsibilities include assessment, diagnosis, development and implementation of individualized care programmes for patients with diabetes and related complications such as neuropathies, vascular problems, foot ulcerations, gangrene, and Charcot. The post holder will interpret X‑ray and tissue samples, arrange appropriate antibiotics and offloading as required.
